GRENFELL ART GALLERY MANDATE
Grenfell Art Gallery is a public art gallery located on the Grenfell Campus of Memorial University in the city of Corner Brook on the picturesque coast of Western Newfoundland. As Memorial University’s art gallery and the only gallery in Newfoundland and Labrador focused solely on the visual arts, Grenfell Art Gallery cultivates a generative engagement with art and art history through a year-round program of exhibitions and outreach activities that are accessible, relevant, and experimental. As an educational resource for the Visual Arts Program, Grenfell Campus, Memorial University and the public gallery for Corner Brook and the Western Newfoundland region the gallery engages in collaborative partnerships with like-minded local, regional, national and international artists, organizations and institutions.

SENIOR CLERK (ASSISTANT CURATOR)

ART GALLERY, SCHOOL OF FINE ARTS
GRENFELL CAMPUS
(Contractual Position to March 25, 2022; Subject to Renewal)
(Part-Time – 21 Hours per Week)
This Position is Funded Through an External Grant.

DUTIES
Reporting to the Gallery Director, the successful applicant will perform complex and difficult clerical work requiring considerable independent judgement. Duties include providing support for exhibitions and public programs, from the research and development stage through to realization and installation; liaising with artists and their representatives, arts institutions and funders; liaising with Grenfell Campus and Memorial University departments including Marketing & Communications and ITS, to ensure a smooth flow of information; conducting independent research that creates new knowledge resulting in collection-based exhibits, publications, web-based projects and targeted public programs to engage various publics; implementing day-to day prescribed museum standards of care, handling, movement and storage of objects in Memorial University Art Collection; assisting with ensuring physical and intellectual access to the Collection; compiling condition and facility reports to museum standard, keeping records of movement and conditions of works and liaise with conservators and couriers when necessary; maintaining collection object files and related correspondence as well as archiving past exhibition files; assisting with public and other Grenfell Art Gallery events including speaking at events where appropriate; overseeing the workflow of other support staff as required; representing the Grenfell Art Gallery at public events, meetings and networking on behalf of the institution; and performing other duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Considerable experience (3-5 years) in general clerical work, including some experience in gallery operations, curatorial studies and exhibition installation; graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in visual arts, art history, or museums studies; or any equivalent combination of experience and training. Experience using Microsoft Office applications on a PC platform, particularly Microsoft Access, Excel and Word, is required, as well as familiarity with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop on a Mac. Strong written and verbal skills are essential. Experience working with students is an asset, as is familiarity with utilizing social media. Attention to detail is a must.

SALARY: $34,952 – $49,008 Per Annum (Non-Bargaining)
