Organization description:
Remai Modern is a new museum of modern and contemporary art in Saskatoon, a growing city on the vast and ever-changing Canadian Prairies. Remai Modern offers a unique perspective on art and culture in the 21st century, with an eye on the future. Building on the legacy of the Mendel Art Gallery, Remai Modern is setting a new direction for art in Saskatchewan. With increased capacity and a diverse team, Remai Modern is advancing as Canada’s museum of modern art.

Duties:

1. Participates in the overall planning, development and implementation of curatorial programs.
2. Conducts scholarly research related to the exhibition program and advises on art historical issues and provides Indigenous perspective to the exhibition development plan.
3. Creates specific exhibition proposals for presentation to the Gallery’s Executive Director, Director Programs & Chief Curator and programs team.
4. Develops exhibition proposals for approved projects research, production, and presentation and publication components. Selects artworks, negotiates loans, arranges contracts, designs and oversees installations, compiles scholarly catalogue essays and biographical information, coordinates photography, editing and proof-reading of text, and participates in media interviews.
5. Coordinates the in-house presentation of exhibitions of art organized by other institutions or guest, Curators, including design and supervision of installation.
6. Prepares detailed budgets and descriptive narratives and other materials required for Gallery needs and granting agencies. Monitors and controls budgets for assigned projects.
7. Researches and recommends artworks for purchase or for acceptance as a donation, for the Gallery’s permanent collection of art. Writes supportive texts for Canadian Cultural Property Review Board’s consideration for donated artwork, as required.
8. Collaborates on the development and coordination of all programs including research, collection, live, publishing, education and interpretive programs as required.
9. Researches and presents lectures, talks, tours and other oral presentations related to programs. Responds to questions from the public regarding Gallery programs and exhibits.
10. Performs ongoing curatorial research through studio and gallery visits.
11. Builds relationships with collectors, donors, curators, academics, publishers, educators and relevant colleagues and represents the Gallery at annual conferences and other types of professional meetings.
12. Supports the preparation of media/press briefings, speeches, presentations and talking points for the Executive Director, Board of Directors and Remai Modern Foundation and the Leadership Team.
13. Supports and promotes the health and safety of employees and the general public in accordance with the Saskatchewan Employment Act, Saskatchewan Health Regulations and Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations and the City of Saskatoon’s administrative Occupational Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures. Maintains and monitors programs which affect public health and safety.
14. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• Masters’ Degree in curatorial studies, art history
• Five years within the past seven years of progressively responsible related experience including originating art exhibits, all facets of research, production, installation, publication, and budget development and control; overseeing the design and production of print and web-based materials and publications, as well as experience with Indigenous contemporary art contexts at a local, national, and international level, as evidenced in their writings and curatorial projects is required.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Preference will be given to Indigenous people of North America (Turtle Island), including those that identify as First Nations, Metis, Inuit, Alaskan Native, and Native American.
• Thorough knowledge of current practices in the proper handling of art work.
• Thorough knowledge of Indigenous contemporary and historical art locally, nationally and internationally.
• Demonstrated ability to design inventive projects and art displays.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct scholarly research, write to publishing standards, and organize exhibitions of art.
• Demonstrated ability to prepare, monitor and manage budgets.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, trustees, volunteers, artists, donors and sponsors.
• Ability to express ideas and concepts effectively, orally and in writing, including the ability to prepare and present oral, written and audio-visual reports of a specialized nature and the ability to create a persuasive case to garner support for key programs and projects.
• Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism, discretion, and confidentiality related to Gallery exhibitions, collections, donors and operations.
• Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
• Ability to guide and support staff and volunteers to achieve identified results.
• Demonstrated organizational and planning skills.
• Demonstrated skill in the use of a computer using the Microsoft Office Suite and collection management software.

Salary:
$74,402.88 to $82,028.16 per year (2018 Rates)
