The Woodstock Art Gallery is launching a provincial call to artists for the creation of a permanent public artwork for the Bruce Flowers Sculpture Garden in the newly named Florence Carlyle Park, located in the City of Woodstock.

The Woodstock Art Gallery is pleased to invite artists residing in Ontario to submit expressions of interest and qualifications to create a permanent public artwork in the City of Woodstock.

On August 12, 2021, Woodstock City Council approved the renaming of the west side of Vansittart Park to Florence Carlyle Park, with a portion designated as the Bruce Flowers Sculpture Garden. Flowers, who was a passionate and inspirational art educator in Woodstock for many decades, passed away in 2018 and left the residual of his estate to the Woodstock Art Gallery with the provision that the funds be used to establish an outside figurative sculpture garden.

This public artwork is important to not only recognize the contributions of an important artist/educator in this community, but it also speaks to the change in attitude and acceptance towards members of the local 2SLGBTQQIA+ community.

The Woodstock Art Gallery emphasizes the request for a contemporary response considering the human form to address one or more of the following thematic options as related to this concept:

  • Love & Acceptance
  • Mentoring & Teaching
  • Community & Connection

Artists and artist teams are asked to submit an application package including an expression of interest, CV, references and examples of previous work. Complete details for the project including the call to artists, application forms and additional support documents can be found on the Public Art page on the Woodstock Art Gallery’s website.

Deadline: October 26, 2021 at 11:59pm

An artwork proposal is not requested at this time. Artist applications will be reviewed on the basis of artistic excellence, expressed written interest in the site and other professional qualifications

The applications will be reviewed by a selection committee of qualified persons, which will recommend a shortlist of artists to develop an artwork proposal. An honorarium of $1,000 for proposal development will be extended to the shortlisted artist. The selected artist will be awarded a $55,000 commission for the completion of the project. Installation of the artwork is estimated to take place in 2023.
