Sheridan is looking for an outstanding individual to join our faculty to teach Design 1 in the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design. Sheridan seeks a part-time professor to teach a one-semester section of Design 1 FAS236H on Tuesdays from 9-12 PM and 2-5 PM (six hours each week) over the thirteen-week fall session, September 14, 2021 through to December 7, 2021.

In FAS236: Students develop an awareness of applied design thinking and theories. Students use design techniques and tools to address a range of design issues through a variety of approaches and media. Students are encouraged to broaden their conception of design and its application in other design and art-related disciplines through creative experimentation. The fundamental principles of design and concept development are introduced through projects involving typography, images, colour, layout and design software for print and online applications.

Design 1 is an introduction to the fundamental elements and principles of design. Topics such as fonts, colour, composition, hierarchy, emphasis, contrast and visual consistency are covered. Students apply particular aspects of these topics to a variety of projects and formats. Each project builds on previous projects and integrates learning acquired through lectures, demonstrations and exercises. Students will learn the Adobe Suite but are also encouraged to complete creative solutions non-digitally.

Art and Art History, a collaborative program between Sheridan and the University of Toronto Mississauga, offers a 4-year Major or Specialist Honours BA in studio and in art history. Interdisciplinary studios include: photography, painting, print media, design, drawing, and sculpture and installation. Art history offerings examine the history, production and reception of a range of visual and aural texts, including (but not limited to) photography, new media, popular culture, and advertising; painting, sculpture, architecture, and the built environment; contemporary art and museum culture; and time-based media, including film and television.

What You’ll be Doing

Sheridan faculty provide academic leadership to programs and courses within their areas of expertise and contribute to the creation of a learning-centred environment where students can develop to their full potential. They also contribute to College, School and program excellence by collaborating on a variety of initiatives such as new program development, applied research and alternative delivery strategies.

• Ensuring that program and course curricula are current, relevant and reflective of best practices within the relevant professional/program disciplines;
• Creating an effective environment for learning which accommodates students’ diverse cultural and educational backgrounds, experiences and individual learning styles;
• Designing appropriate strategies and tools for facilitating and assessing student learning;
• Developing multi-media materials and alternative delivery strategies, and incorporating appropriate educational technologies into the learning process.

At the first-year level, the incumbent will assist students in learning the Adobe Creative Suite — Illustrator (Ai), InDesign (Indd) and Photoshop (PS) — and introduce the foundations of composition, typography, colour and conceptual and visual communication. The incumbent will help students find their own aesthetic, creative and communicative voice in a range of art and design media.

Professors also ensure that students are aware of course and program learning outcomes, learning strategies and evaluation techniques; provide individual tutoring and academic counselling; and evaluate student progress/achievement within assigned courses.

The successful candidate(s) will also meet the following qualifications:

• Master of Fine Arts (MFA) preferred;
• Experience in teaching at the post-secondary level preferred;
• An individual who can demonstrate an ability to teach design history and practice within a fine-art context at the first-year level;
• An individual who has an informed view of contemporary design practices, issues and criticism. A pluralistic approach to contemporary art is also preferred.
• Strong network of contacts with other professionals, designers, employers;
• Knowledge of industry specific software.
