McMaster University’s School of the Arts (SOTA) offers intensive programs in Studio Art, Art History, Music & Music Cognition, and Theatre & Film Studies. SOTA is supported by staff and faculty that are dedicated to high quality teaching and research. Our students study the social and cultural implications of the arts, and they collaborate with faculty in studio and laboratory settings, mount and critique exhibitions and theatrical productions, and train as solo and ensemble performers.

Studio Arts at McMaster explores a wide range of media including sculpture, printmaking, painting, drawing, ceramics, installation art, digital technologies and hybrid practices combined with courses in art history, contemporary art, studio research, and professional practice. Through close connection with faculty we promote excellence in artistic production in all its diverse forms, as well as critical, theoretical analysis and study in historical and contemporary contexts.

Job Description:

McMaster University’s School of the Arts is currently looking for a Printmaking Lead – Instructional Assistant. The Printmaking Instructional Assistant would be responsible for providing pedagogical and technical support to printmaking instructors, teaching assistants and students. They would design and modify studio processes, class demonstrations, online instructional videos, and lesson plans in accordance with the curriculum priorities of the instructor within an academic unit, department, or faculty. Requirements:

An MFA in printmaking is preferred, in addition to a broad range of experience in some combination of the following:

• Ferric chloride copper etching
• Photo based etching
• Stone Lithography /Plate lithography
• Wood cut and other relief processes
• Collagraph
• Screen printing
• Large format digital printing

Knowledge experience in the following will be considered an asset:

• Routine studio maintenance (may include press maintenance)
• Familiarity with daily operations of a shared print studio
• Working knowledge of safer alternatives in the print studio (including alternatives to VOC and traditional print mediums)

The print studio is dedicated to the pursuit of safer alternatives and requires the Printmaking Instructional Assistant applicant to have a deep understanding of traditional print knowledge, methodologies, materials, and processes, but also the ability to move outside of traditional process to embrace new non-toxic and environmentally responsible approaches. They must be open to working collaboratively in problem solving as well as taking direction and seeking clarification or assistance when needed. Instructional assistants work closely with Faculty and Sessional instructors to assist students with technical production, as well as the critical, theoretical analysis of class objectives.
