PATCH provides artists with opportunities to exhibit their work in public space. The project was launched in 2014 in response to a City of Toronto requirement requiring 50% of construction hoarding (the safety walls around construction sites) to display community artwork. We partner with landowners and property developers to create paid exhibition opportunities for Toronto area artists.

What is PATCH?
PATCH stands for Public Art Through Construction Hoarding. We install permanent and temporary art in underused spaces, like construction sites. We collaborate with artists, landowners, and property developers to create exhibitions that not only respond to and beautify the streetscape but strengthen community ties around our installations.
PATCH is a social enterprise project of The STEPS Initiative, a charitable public art organization. To date, our team has managed over 65 PATCH installations and numerous community-engaged public art projects across the city. Recent PATCH Projects include: • Pohan Wu’s “Intervening Variables” (36 Birch Ave, Toronto)
- Kirk Sutherland’s “Kaleidoscopic” (410 Front St, Toronto)
- Mirna Chacin’s “Where the Sun Rises” (155 Queens Quay E, Toronto) What Do We Do? • Identify potential sites for public art
- Recruit and offer mentorship opportunities to GTA artists who are new to public art
- Liaise between artists, property owners and developers, construction, and exhibit installation companies
- Oversee all project management, logistical, administrative and promotional tasks required to bring exhibits to life! Who Are PATCH Artists?

For 2020, we are looking for artists who live, work or play in the GTA and are interested in exhibiting their work in the public realm. Artists should have experience producing and exhibiting work, experience working with clients, meeting deadlines, and the ability to produce high-quality professional work.
Applications must be submitted online here by the stated deadline (no hard-copy, emailed, or late applications will be accepted). Applicants are required to upload five (5) pieces of visual support material, an artistic CV outlining their relevant experience, as well as a letter of reference.
This is a competitive process and unfortunately, we cannot accept all applicants. Applications are reviewed through a juried process in collaboration with our Artist Advisory Committee, comprising leaders from the cultural sector with expertise in a variety of artistic media.
What Are We Looking For?
We have found that PATCH clients have gravitated towards colourful, abstract and illustrative work open to interpretation, and are less drawn to realism. There has also been considerable interest in street photography, as well as artwork characterized by sophisticated palettes, and explorations of monochromatic or black and white work.
Submissions that meaningfully engage with issues such as reclaiming public space, sustainable living, promoting cultural dialogue, multiculturalism and civic engagement are also encouraged.
Compensation:
Artists are always paid for their work. For exhibits that feature large-scale prints of existing artwork, artist fees are calculated based on the number of featured works, while fees for commissioned or community-engaged commissioned works will vary based on the scope of the engagement.
