DEADLINE: ONGOING

The Ottawa School of Art (OSA) is pleased to announce the extension of its artists residency program to run during the school year. The purpose of the artist residency program is to provide artists with the opportunity to devote uninterrupted time to their artwork in the supportive and stimulating environment at OSA. The residency program is located at the ByWard Market campus where artists have access to specialized studios for ceramics, printmaking and sculpture. Resident artists have access to these studios during the school’s regular hours of operation (i.e. they will not have 24 hour access). OSA accepts residency applications all year round. The number of residents at any given time may be limited, but interested artists are encouraged to apply at any time during the year and arrangements will be worked out on an individual basis. The length of the residency can cover any length of time during this time period. Ottawa residents ARE eligible for this program.

OSA will provide:

  • Set periods of free studio time in the specialized studio of choice (i.e. outside scheduled class hours). A studio schedule will be developed with the artist prior to the start of the residency.
  • Basic general studio supplies (e.g. acids and solvents in the print studio, etc.)
  • Assistance to any resident artists (letters of support/invitation, etc.)
  • Wireless internet access at OSA
  • When needed, OSA will provide information on various forms of accommodations (e.g. self-catering apartments, university residences, etc.) and will negotiate reasonable rates for the artists.
  • An opportunity to make a presentation of the work done during the residency.

Resident Artists will be responsible for:

  • Travel costs to and from Ottawa
  • Accommodation, food and local travel costs
  • Studio supplies (e.g. paper for printing, stone for sculpting, clay, etc.)
  • A presentation on their work to OSA students
  • 2 studio proofs from each edition (printmaking only)
  • A presentation of work completed during the residency
  • A workshop or demonstration (optional – OSA will pay for teaching time)

Application Process

  • Completed digital application form

  • Tell us how long (approximately) your residency will be
  • Provide tentative start and end dates for your residency project

Information about Border Services

Most resident artists coming to Ottawa from outside Canada will need a visitors visa to enter the country. Below is a link to the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website. Artists coming from outside Canada must do their own research on what will be required (the requirements are different for each country) for them to enter Canada for the residency.

Most visitors to Canada will now need an Electronic Travel Authorization in addition to their visa. Information on the ETA is also available on the Citizenship & Immigration Canada website.
