BAD HATS THEATRE IS THRILLED TO BE EXPANDING OUR THEATRE FOR YOUNG AUDIENCES NEW-PLAY DEVELOPMENT STREAM, NEW BAD IDEAS.

This year Bad Hats Theatre is seeking submissions from Playwrights and Composers looking to develop a new work or new adaptation intended for family audiences. These pieces can be new musicals, or plays with music, at any stage of development, including pieces that are still in their conceptual phase.

We are prioritizing applications from Playwright-Composer teams developing work where music is an integral part of the story, however we’re also interested in applications from individual Playwrights or Composers. Pieces without a musical component are still eligible for consideration. We’re placing particular emphasis on selecting teams from diverse backgrounds, including but not limited to BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and Next Generation Artists.

THIS IS A PAID OPPORTUNITY and each writer and composer will be compensated during this entire development period.  We will be selecting between two to three pieces to participate in the program. Each new work will receive dramaturgical support over a structured three-month period from March 1, 2021 – May 31, 2021, that will culminate in a presentation for Artistic Directors and industry professionals across the sector in June 2021. In addition, all participants will be invited to attend a series of Masterclasses led by industry professionals. The Masterclass curriculum will be finalized following the selection of program participants as we are curating these sessions based on participant’s needs and requests. The program will be Co-Curated by Matt Pilipiak [Managing & Artistic Producer] and Fiona Sauder [Artistic Director], Produced by Victor Pokinko [Executive Producer], and Dramaturgically led by
Andrew Cheng [York University, fu-GEN Theatre, Silk Bath Collective].

Who is Eligible?

  • Any Professional Artist, 18 years of age and older, who is a Canadian Resident.

  • In our assessment of applicants we will be prioritizing pieces from the following groups:

    • BIPOC Artists

    • LGBTQ+ Artists

    • Next Generation Artists (Aged 18 – 35)

  • As mentioned above, we are also prioritizing Playwright/Composer teams, but are open to individuals applying. If you are an individual applying, please indicate if you’d like to potentially be paired with a Playwright/Composer for the purposes of this project.

  • Additionally, pieces without a music component will be eligible for consideration. If you submit a piece which doesn’t currently include a musical component, we ask that you outline whether you’re interested in exploring that option, including if you would be open to being paired with a composer or allowing us to help you find one that might fit.

Deadline for submissions is Monday February 15, 2021 at 11:59PM
