The Women’s Centre of Calgary is a resource, information and community centre for girls and women, and is located in Crescent Heights. We support women to access basic needs resources, to work for change on the issues that affect them, and to build community with other women.
Bringing people together to connect is core to the work that we do. The pandemic has impacted our centre’s ability to be together as a community.
In response, we are looking for a woman-identified artist in residence for spring and summer to create a community-informed mural that reflects the diversity and resilience of the people who make up the Women’s Centre.
The artist will be responsible for overseeing the mural creation process and engaging the community in helping shape it through outdoor or online workshops and events.
The mural will go up on a long side wall overlooking our garden space. It has a fresh coat of white paint on it. The art is not expected to cover the entire wall.
To apply, applicants will need to submit:
- A proposed idea for a community process for developing the mural.
- An estimated budget for supplies.
- A proposed timeline (to be completed between mid-May and August 2021).
- Samples of previous mural or related artwork.
The Women’s Centre will provide an honorarium of $600 to the artist.
We welcome applications from all women artists, but those most impacted by systemic oppression will be prioritized.
To see the wall in person or to ask further questions, please email Sarah Winstanley, Community Development Lead, at sarah@womenscentrecalgary.org.
