Exhibition Platforms, Special Projects, Film Festival and More!

Hamilton Artists Inc. is seeking dynamic proposals from artists, collectives and curators at various stages of their careers for its numerous exhibition platforms and public programs. The Inc. is mandated to exhibit a range of artistic disciplines and career levels, and a cross-section of artists from local, regional and national communities. As an artist-run centre, we are interested in works/projects that have potential impact, push boundaries and engage with critical, conceptual and/or experimental thinking from a diverse range of perspectives and voices. We are committed to providing platforms for risk-taking and creating an inclusive space for exploring expanded art practices. The Inc. supports submissions that showcase artists’ and curators’ most recent endeavours as well as works that incite conversation and promote a range of intersectional narratives.
We welcome submissions from all qualified individuals and strongly encourage submissions from members of equity-seeking communities, including women, racialized and Indigenous persons, persons with disabilities, and persons of all sexual orientations and gender identities/expressions. Please advise us of any accommodations needed to ensure you can access and complete the submissions process.
Hamilton Artists Inc. adheres to, and where possible exceeds, recommended CARFAC/ IMAA compensation rates to artists. Please see the full descriptions for each call on our website to identify which opportunity is best suited to your practice and objectives.
Cannon Gallery

The Cannon Gallery is the Inc.’s largest gallery space and is programmed three years in advance. We encourage open proposals from local, national, and international artists and curators at all levels of their careers.

The James Gallery is the Inc.’s dedicated members’ gallery. Submissions to exhibit in the James Gallery are based on annual themed calls developed by the Programming Committee.

Cannon Project Wall

The Cannon Project Wall is an 8x 36 foot billboard on the side of our building. Located at the corner of James and Cannon Streets, the billboard sees upwards of 10,000 vehicular and pedestrian foot traffic each day.

ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard

The ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard is a malleable outdoor space that hosts a range of activities including an outdoor screening series and film festival, short-term installations, and participatory community arts projects.

Special Projects are independent initiatives diverse in nature that may take place at the gallery or off-site. They may manifest themselves through happenings, print materials, digital platforms, multiples, screenings, workshops or other forms of public presentation or intervention.

A project for refugee, newcomer and immigrant artists

Incoming! addresses the needs of newcomer, immigrant and refugee artists through free workshops, events, and an art exhibition taking place in winter 2018-19. Interested artists are encouraged to apply for the exhibition.

Call for Youth Artists: Sandwich Board Re-Design

We’re seeking proposals from young artists (aged 15 – 25) to re-design the face of our sidewalk sandwich board. The sandwich board serves as a welcoming invitation to the gallery, encouraging pedestrians and passerby to enter our space.

Photophobia: Contemporary Moving Image Festival

Photophobia is an annual festival of short-format contemporary media, film, video and moving image. Not confined by restrictions or themes, Photophobia is a two-part screening series presented every August under the cover of night in the Irving Zucker Sculpture Garden at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the ArcelorMittal Dofasco Courtyard at Hamilton Artists Inc.

Writers/ Essayists

We’re seeking submissions from regional writers interested in producing short, commissioned texts to accompany our exhibitions and programs. Selected writers will be called upon to respond to the specific content of an exhibition and produce an essay or text up to 1000 words.
