Transgender Day of Remembrance
November 20, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
On Saturday November 20th 2021, Trans Wellness Ontario will commemorate Trans Day of Remembrance & Resilience by holding an outdoor gathering for the local trans and queer community, and our allies, in Lanspeary Park at 1:00pm-3:00pm.
The event will feature speakers, singers, musicians, poets, artists, a community art activity, drumming circle, food and beverages, an accessible toilet and sanitation station. Our gathering will both honour the lives of transgender people who have been targeted by anti-trans prejudice and violence around the world and raise awareness about this issue more locally.
This event will adhere to provincial and local restrictions, including physical distancing, masks, and screening. All are welcome. This is a family friendly event, small children must be accompanied by an adult.
If you have any questions contact Derrick at volunteer@transwellness.ca
Trans Wellness Ontario would like to thank our Partners for this event, Run for Rocky Legacy Project and Windsor-Essex Pride Fest, for their generous support. TWO also thanks Zehrs Floral Shop on Malden Road for their donation of flowers for this event.
More Information About the Day: Transgender Day of Remembrance & Resilience:
Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR) is observed annually on November 20th to memorialize those we have lost to anti-trans hatred and prejudice. This internationally recognized day started in response to honor the life of Rita Hester, first as the 1998 “Remembering Our Dead” web project and 1999 candlelight vigil in San Francisco. TDoRs held in the years since then have raised public awareness of the hate crimes and violence against transgender people, particularly the disproportionate violence directed towards the black trans femmes and trans femmes of colour in our community, and publicly honour the lives of trans people everywhere.
In 2015, BreakOUT introduced Transgender Day of Resilience to shift the narrative from one focused on trans deaths to trans survival, resilience, and joy! This name is used to describe BreakOUT’s annual art offering for trans people of colour. Transgender Day of Resilience has since then become a widely recognized extension of the Day of Remembrance, celebrating trans lives while also recognizing the disproportionate rate in which trans communities of colour, specifically trans women of colour, are targeted in violent attacks.
We want to amplify the focus on how trans communities of colour resist violence.
We want to help address how under patriarchal, capitalist society, trans lives are not valued and challenge this by showcasing trans people’s power in the face of adversity!
We want to continue to honour our trans ancestors in a holistic way that centres the power they held throughout their lifetimes!
I quote the Youth Team of the GSA Network, “For this Trans Day of Resilience, I challenge people to talk about trans lives, past and present, in a way that holds people’s agency, and to show up for trans people not only during death but also in life.”
And in the words of the organizers of the art project “Honouring Trans Lives, Dreaming of Trans Freedom”, today let us share dreams beyond resilience, toward our free trans future … Never forget your power. With art as our portal, we can imagine and femifest the world we deserve. May trans people of color everywhere see ourselves safe and cherished, rested and healed, fully alive. Let’s dream and shape an irresistible future together.”
