Desire(d) Paths by Colectivo Satelital
June 1, 2021 - August 21, 2021

June 1 – August 21

Desire(d) Paths is a participatory virtual exhibition by Colectivo Satelital that invites audiences to explore systems of communication, transportation, importation and identification, and how these systems relate to the process of navigating national borders. Through an interactive website with downloadable activity templates and a free biweekly workshop series, the project invites the public to use multiple art forms, including textiles, photography, printmaking, industrial design, and creative writing to envision new systems and create alternative pathways to navigating cross-border relationships.

The workshop series is free, open to all ages, and material kits will be delivered to participants in advance.

Workshops

Designing a Transportation Vehicle
June 12th, 1-2:30pm
Led by: Alejandro Rizzo Nervo & Cecilia Salcedo

Designing a Transportation Vehicle will be a workshop where we will create an opportunity to connect design thinking and hands-on making to reconsider how and why we move across the world. Using prompts, we will encourage participants to think imaginatively and out of the box, forgoing any preconceived ideas of how transportation and vehicles can function.

Creating Your Desired Travel Document
June 23rd, 7-8:30pm
Led by: Ana Luisa Bernárdez & Sebastián Rodríguez y Vasti

Creating Your Desired Travel Document will be a hands-on workshop that explores ideas behind travel, immigration laws, and borders and therefore, identity documents like passports, visas, and permits. Participants will then create their own desired travel document. This will be followed by a discussion where we collectively reflect on our creations.

Natural Dyeing
July 10th, 1-2:30pm
Led by: Camila Salcedo & denirée isabel

Discover the magic of the natural world around you! This workshop will teach participants a few different natural dye techniques from dyeing to flower pounding with local plant materials. We will talk about the importance of buying locally, appreciating the lands we are on, and being conscious of our impact on the systems of global trades.

Art funding loopholes for non-permanent residents in Canada
July 21st, 7-8:30pm
Led by: Ana Luisa Bernárdez & Sebastián Rodríguez y Vasti

Securing funding for projects as a non-permanent resident can be tricky due to the eligibility criteria of most granting bodies. In this workshop we will discuss options and loopholes to find ways around these obstacles. There will be a presentation followed by a discussion, and participants are welcome to bring project ideas to brainstorm funding options together.

Writing a Letter to your Immigrant Self
August 7th, 1-2:30pm
Led by: Alejandro Rizzo Nervo & denirée isabel

Using an interactive game-like approach, together we retrace our past selves as we journey back through time in the form of writing. We ask you to reflect on when you immigrated to your current home and the relationships you’ve developed between here and there, now and then while acknowledging the uprooting that occurs when relocating.

Creating a Portable Memorial
August 18th, 7-8:30pm
Led by: Camila Salcedo & Cecilia Salcedo

Creating a Portable Memorial will be a sensory workshop through which we engage the five senses to remember family members far away, or no longer with us. We will build our own sensory memory boxes via a series of activities from creating a digital collage to recreating objects with play dough, so that we can return to them whenever we are missing our loved ones.

While workshops are free and open to anyone in Toronto, space is limited and priority will be given to Etobicoke residents, newcomers, immigrants and refugees and people who experience barriers to accessing arts opportunities. Apply here to participate in any or all of the workshops!
