Reporting to and in tandem with the Program Manager, Community Cultural Development, the Community Arts Coordinator, is responsible for providing leadership and facilitation to implement the Richmond Arts Strategy through a wide range of programs, activities, services and events that raise public awareness and participation in the arts. The Community Arts Coordinator also works to support local artists and cultural organizations through public profile or recognition, professional development and other creative opportunities for collaboration and mentorship. The position is a subject matter leader in arts program development and delivery, community cultural development, cultural planning and communications. It has a city-wide mandate to develop, implement and promote opportunities for the arts to grow and flourish, support professional and non-professional arts organizations, and to create legacy programs that will advance the arts in everyday life and showcase Richmond’s diverse cultural community. The position works with and collaborates with a variety of individuals and non-profit groups, City staff and agencies, artists, cultural industries and the media to support the arts and provide opportunities and partnerships for artists and arts organizations as well as engage the general public in the arts.

Examples of key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Collaborate with community partners and City staff, develop and implement programs and activities to increase awareness and participation in the arts such as Culture Days and Artists-in-Residence, including planning, event management, staffing, public relations, marketing and reporting.
  • Collaborate with community partners and City staff, develop and implement programs and activities that support capacity building and/or profile raising for artists and arts organizations such as Richmond Arts Awards and professional development workshops, including planning, event management, staffing, public relations/marketing and reporting.
  • Work in tandem with Program Manager, Community Cultural Development as subject matter specialist and leader in community arts development, staying up-to-date on industry trends, best practices and demographic shifts, and program activities and events that respond to the growing and changing community.
  • Collaborate with staff and stakeholders (internal and external) to maintain, develop and grow activities that support arts and cultural sector and broaden arts experiences in the community.
  • Develop, update and disseminate information on a range of communications platforms (e.g. website, news releases, social media, online advertising, posters, printed materials) to raise awareness of and participation in the arts, including programs such as Culture Days, Richmond Arts Awards, etc.
  • Oversee City web presence related to HowArtWorks (website and social media accounts) and contribute to other City social media channels as appropriate.
  • Solicit content for, write and distribute e-newsletter (approx bi-weekly) and maintain subscription list.
  • Provide leadership or supervision to contractors, volunteers, staff and community partners as needed.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge and experience in planning and organizing public programs and events including but not limited to site logistics, promotion, risk management, staffing/volunteer coordination, talent management and scheduling.
  • Knowledge of cultural sector trends and leading practices within a community development framework.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver arts, culture and heritage services within the community.
  • Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing communications and marketing strategies for arts and cultural activities and programs.
  • Ability to address complex situations that require sound decision-making skills and exercise considerable independence of judgement, action, tact and initiative.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Sound understanding of, and capacity to deliver services that advance and promote broad community accessibility, diversity and inclusivity through the arts, while contributing to a creative and inclusive working and learning environment.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to occasionally work irregular hours, such as evenings and/or weekends.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Mail Chimp and Square Space an asset.
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • University graduation with a Bachelors degree or equivalent in Arts Administration, Art History, Fine Arts, Cultural Planning or another related field.
  • Course studies in Project/Event Management, Arts Administration, Marketing or Communications, Leadership and/or a related discipline (or commensurate work experience).
  • Experience working in arts administration, communications or cultural planning and a minimum 5 years’ experience in a coordinating or managing role in the arts within a not-for-profit or municipal government setting.
  • Practical experience working with artists and arts organizations, with an understanding of non-profit management.
  • Fluency in Mandarin or Cantonese an asset.
  • Must successfully clear a Police Information Check.

Working Conditions:

Duties are performed in an office environment.

Pay Range/Rate: $39.65 – $46.80 per hour

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 8:15am to 5:00pm (Compressed Work Week Schedule)
