The New Gallery (TNG) is seeking a bright, community-minded individual to join our highly collaborative team in the role of communications and outreach coordinator (C&OC).

The C&OC reports to the director and has a working relationship with TNG’s staff, volunteers, and board of directors. The C&OC are the staff lead for external communications and are responsible for developing and implementing outreach initiatives.

The successful candidate will have an interest in contemporary art and artist-run culture, and a passion for working with communities. They will be supportive of TNG’s ongoing efforts to be an equitable, accessible, and inclusive organization, and bring these values into their daily work. TNG is also looking for applicants who are detail-oriented, reliable, and who excel at collaborating with others. Additional skills sets include: exemplar communication skills; copy editing experience; adept with social media platforms and social media management tools (i.e. Mailchimp, Later, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter); familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Workspace; and experience in program development. Previous design experience and additional language skills in any Chinese dialects, French, or Indigenous languages from Treaty 7 are considered assets. The willingness to work evenings and weekends is required.

Specific Duties
  • Manage external communications with audiences and partners regarding TNG activities.
  • Support communications with the media as required.
  • Ensure consistent brand and voice in external communications, as developed with the communications committee.
  • Lead the design, editing, production, and distribution of all communications materials and TNG Press projects.
  • Define and implement TNG’s editorial calendar, including but not limited to e-newsletters, social media, and mail-outs.
  • Work collaboratively with the communications committee to create and manage integrated marketing/communication strategies to build audiences for programs, events and services.
  • Track and report engagement analytics across social media and website.
  • Maintain and update organization’s website and online content on an ongoing basis.
  • Coordinate the upcoming website rebuild taking place through TNG’s Main Frame pilot.
  • Identify and develop partnerships with other organizations and communities to collaborate on new programs and/or increase access to existing TNG programming.
  • Work collaboratively with TNG’s artists, community partners, and the programming committee to conceptualize outreach programming.
  • Facilitate outreach programs as needed, i.e. lead tours, moderate talks, support workshops.
  • Implement existing/research new accessibility considerations in communications and outreach programming, i.e. including alt-text/captions, accessible design, live captions.
  • Contribute to operational and project grant applications and reporting.
  • Participate in TNG fundraising events, including bingos and casinos.
  • Support day-to-day operations as needed.
  • Act as a liaison between TNG, stakeholders, and audiences to share our mission, mandate, and activities, representing TNG in a courteous manner.
  • Participate in training as required.
  • Attend monthly board and communications committee meetings, as well as occasional visioning and strategic planning sessions.

This is a part-time (three days, 22.5 hours/week) one-year contract with the intention of renewal. Compensation for this position includes a salary of $23,400 per annum, three weeks (nine days) paid vacation, health care benefits, and professional development days off with a corresponding spending account. Note that for applicants under 30, there are opportunities to access full-time hours seasonally, although this is not guaranteed, nor is it a requirement to be eligible for this role.

About Us

TNG is an artist-run centre located in Mohkinstsis/Calgary on the ancestral and traditional territories of the people of the Treaty 7 region in Southern Alberta. This charitable centre for contemporary art was established in 1975 as the Clouds & Water Gallery and Visual Production Society.

Currently, TNG operates:

  • Main Space: An exhibition venue in a storefront of the historic Canton Block in Calgary Chinatown.
  • Billboard 208: A programming site situated on the exterior of TNG’s storefront.
  • Resource Centre: A combined library/archive and flexible meeting space.
  • Main Frame: An online platform for web-based projects.

These venues support the research, creation, and exhibition of socially relevant and politically informed creative practices from artists at all junctures of their careers, while enabling a public engagement with artist-run culture and contemporary art. TNG’s programming comprises a broad range of art and educational activities, including exhibitions, publications, residencies, offsite projects, and community collaborations that serve to invigorate audiences’ experience of contemporary art and culture.
