2020 City of Kitchener Artist-in-Residence CALL FOR PROPOSALS

The City of Kitchener invites proposals from Waterloo region artists working in any arts discipline. We welcome and encourage applications from artists of all ethnic or cultural backgrounds and gender identities, from Indigenous to immigrant, able-bodied to living with disabilities, binary to non-conforming. Proposed projects should demonstrate compelling artistic vision, respond to the region and engage the community while advancing the artist’s practice. This program supports innovation and excellence in arts.

The program is presented by the city’s Arts and Creative Industries unit and citizen-based public art working group (PAWG).  The opportunity is open to regional artists of any contemporary or traditional discipline, including, but not limited to:

  • Bead, quill and leather work
  • Carving and sculpture
  • Dance
  • Design and media arts
  • Digital and film arts
  • Folk art forms
  • Literature and spoken word
  • Music
  • Multi-disciplinary works
  • Opera
  • Theatre, musical theatre and performing arts
  • Visual arts (painting, illustration, textiles, collage, etc.)

At the end of the year of residency, the selected artist may choose to present a showcase in a format that highlights the work they have accomplished in the community.

The artist in residence appointment offers a $10,000 honorarium. An additional $2,500 is available for project expenses, such as compensating collaborators, purchasing supplies, renting space and promotional activities. Artists are encouraged to propose projects of a scale and time commitment that reflect the level of compensation offered. It is up to the discretion of the chosen artist and city staff to realize a schedule that fairly and reasonably manifests this approach. It is not expected that this program replaces other career opportunities, but rather adds to the artist’s professional development.

Deadline: October 31, 2019, midnight.
