JOB POSTING: Chief Operating Officer

The McMichael Canadian Art Collection ranks among Canada’s top public galleries in size and significance. The three floors of Gallery, exhibition, and programming space, comprising 25,000 sq.ft., are surrounded by a network of outdoor trails, outdoor sculpture garden and 100 acres of conservation land with breathtaking views of the Humber Valley. Over 6,500 works of art representing the Art of Canada comprise the permanent collection, and the gallery welcomes on average more than 115,000 visitors annually. As a public institution, the McMichael is committed to delivering exceptional visitor experience throughout our campus grounds and facilities.


Reporting to the Executive Director, the Chief Operating Officer (COO) is responsible for the operational, human capital and financial oversight of the organization. As a key player of the senior management team, the COO will be part of the annual business planning and setting of department objectives that meet the business plan and strategic direction of the organization.

The areas of oversight for this position are Finance & Human Resources, Building & Operations, Security & Visitor Experience, and Information Technology. Qualified candidates must have minimum 10 years facilities and operational experience with financial oversight in an institutional environment -ideally in the not for profit cultural sector. Experience working with Boards and government relations is required. Strong technical computer knowledge and experience with remote systems is necessary. The successful incumbent will have a minimum of Bachelor’s degree with focus on Business or Arts Administration with financial management experience and training. Strong leadership skills with ability to develop project plans and oversee multiple aspects of operations will be necessary. A passion for Canadian art as well as an understanding of public sector, not-for profit organizations, and government relations is desired. Fluency in French is a strong asset.
