As an alternative space, Black Cat Artspace doesn’t have to answer to any particular set of aesthetics or rules, and as a result has held a wide variety of shows, in a number of mediums grace the walls over the past 6 and a half years.

The Salon of Inclusiveness is a playful and positive take on the Salon des Refusés. In 1863 two thirds of paintings submitted for the Paris Salon were refused by the conservative French Academy. Rejected work included that by artists such as Courbet, Édouard Manet, Camille Pissaro and Johan Jongkind, whose work didn’t align with traditional tastes. So many artists protested this vast rejection, that a new exhibition was organized – the ‘Salon des Refusés’, held in another part of the Palais de Industrias. The attention from this event undermined the French Academy and served to legitimize the emerging forms of avant-garde art.

Due to the popularity of the show in previous years we will be hosting TWO Opening reception(s):
December 5th, 2019 – 7pm – 10:30pm
December 6th, 2019 – 7pm – 10:30pm

Near the beginning of each opening there will be time for a friendly and informal critique where anyone showing can explain their work and others will have a chance to offer a critique or ask questions.

Exhibition runs from December 6th 2019 – December 31st 2019

Gallery hours: Thursday – Sunday: 2-7pm
Monday-Wednesday: Closed

We’ve determined a safe estimate of the usable wall space of hanging a show salon style in the space, allowing for varying sizes and shapes and have determined a set hanging fee of $45.00 per 12 inch x 12 inch square, with a limit of maximum of 2 works per artist and no work can be over 4 and a half feet in width or height.

And, like many shows we host, the work can be for sale, commission free!
