CB Nuit Mission Statement

CB Nuit creates community through art. It supports the vision and presentation in Corner Brook, NL, of unique and inspiring art projects created by professional artists, students, & community groups.~

CB Nuit is a magical and inspiring art event on the West Coast of Newfoundland, Ktaqmkuk nestled on the shore of the Elmastukwek / Bay of Islands, where you will find Corner Brook, a small community with a beautiful creative spirit. It is important to acknowledge that the land on which we bring art is traditional M’ikmaq territory. CB Nuit respects the diverse histories and cultures of the Indigenous people of this province including the Beothuk, the M’ikmaq, Innu, Inuit.

Since 2017, CB Nuit has taken place in downtown Corner Brook, on and near the main commercial street – West Street. The street shuts down allowing large pedestrian audiences the opportunity to experience art and their community in a new way. As they wander through the festival area, they encounter the heart of CB Nuit, where numerous site-specific projects are installed at local businesses and public indoor and outdoor spaces.

In 2020, the organization pivoted to an online festival model that allowed artists to broadcast their live installations. The festival was centered around a thoughtfully designed Virtual West Street hub on our website that provided an innovative way to bring the projects together in a festival-like atmosphere.

For the 2021 iteration of the festival we are planning a hybrid live and online festival connecting both Virtual West St. and actual West Street. This allows for the exploration of new creative territory – considering the core idea of ‘cross pollination’ that has driven the festival from its inception.

With this predisposition, it becomes interesting for us to also explore the idea of cross pollination between not only art disciplines, and platforms but also cultures and communities.

Festival Priorities:

  • We invite creatives and makers of any discipline.

  • We welcome established, emerging, or new applicants to apply regardless of their experience.

  • We encourage applicants to propose projects that are works in progress or not yet realized.

  • We encourage applicants to propose projects that are community-focused and participatory in nature while being considerate of audience experience and involvement.

  • We encourage projects that are made for unconventional spaces, and are experimental in their nature.

  • We invite collaborative and collective/group projects that explore the idea of cross pollination between art disciplines and culture.

  • We encourage creators to keep sustainability in mind when making.

  • We encourage and will give priority to local talent including all of the communities of Corner Brook and area.

CB Nuit will support all applicants in the following ways:

  • Selected applicants will be paid a professional fee for completed projects (travel and material costs will be considered and remunerated accordingly).

  • An additional fee will be remunerated for workshops delivered.

  • Technical support for delivering projects in an online or public space will be provided. Installation support is provided on festival days.
