Xpace is accepting expressions of interest from emerging artists for a group exhibition curated by Christina Oyawale (@christinaoyawale) which will run from May 27 – July 3, 2022.

DEADLINE: April 11, 2022 (11:59 PM EST)

Who is allowed access to the public sphere and how can bodies traditionally deemed apolitical operate politically within private space? How do we as disabled, neurodivergent and Mad individuals create space where the non-visible can be visible? How do we approach the act of documenting our physical limitations by taking hold of our body-mind autonomy? We have been let down by the structural systems upheld by ableism that prevent us from accessing adequate health care, schooling and communal spaces. As disabled artists, we have come to explore these topics through futurity in order to imagine new worlds where our body-minds are celebrated. How are we challenging our neurotypical and ableist world? By existing.

Xpace Cultural Centre pays a CARFAC fee to each contributing artist at $431.

Keywords: futurity, chronic pain, invisible disabilities, madness, neurodivergence, ableism, digital futures, community interdependence, ableism, photographic technologies, video/film, installation, performance for video

We invite disabled, d/Deaf, Mad, Sick, neurodivergent and chronically ill artists who are questioning and exploring these topics in their artistic practice to submit proposals. This exhibition will prioritize those whose disabilities intersect with other marginalized communities, such as Indigenous, Black, people of colour, women, 2SLGBTQ+.
