ABOUT

The Virtual REsidency consists of three six-week paid opportunities, running from January to June 2022. We want to spark and celebrate ideas for three Indigenous, Black, and/or otherwise racialized artists living remotely outside of urban settings and/or within urban environments in Ontario. Artists with and without print experience are encouraged to apply.

This virtual learning opportunity will give artists access to creative resources, space, and funding to make or build creative work.

After a challenging year filled with isolation and disconnect, this Virtual REsidency initiative will allow each participating artist to RE-search, RE-present, RE-vitalize, and RE-envision their artistic practice utilizing print and mixed media. Selected artists will be encouraged to think of their practice as a continuum where experimentation is vital.

Open Studio has a rich history of supporting artists in printmaking practices, public art and programming, and providing a safe, collaborative studio environment. We also recognize that Open Studio has been primarily operated by settler-colonial peoples. Our mission moving forward is to re-envision our urban studio space as a place that provides resources and guidance, and invests in community and culture while cultivating ongoing creativity.

Eligibility Criteria

• An artist that identifies as Indigenous, Black, and/or as a racialized person
• An artist with an interest in working with printmaking mediums
• Artists with and without print experience are encouraged to apply
• An artist living in Ontario

BENEFITS [per artist]

• $3,000 artist fee
• $1,000 materials bursary
• Staff support and tailored mentorship facilitation
• Access to resources such as printing equipment, supplies, and workshops
• Promotion through Open Studio’s marketing initiatives
• Payment for travel costs for a visit to Open Studio may be discussed

Although this is primarily a virtual residency, we will be encouraging artists to merge their digital learning with in-person learning to gain access to our collaborative studio space. Please note that we are happy to supply artists accepted to the program with a letter of support to be used for further funding applications.

Health and Safety measures permitting, we also intend to run a hands-on printmaking workshop during National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21st) that will be promoted virtually. Online components will materialize with the needs of the artists in mind and may include virtual workshops, artist talks, studio tours and creative discussions. There is also a possible opportunity to showcase artwork on Open Studio’s Feature Wall following the end of the residency.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

This residency aims to celebrate how networks, gatherings and communication are fostered through digital media. Artists will be encouraged to create work, mainly through virtual workshops, over a period of six weeks. Despite recent challenges, many artists have adapted to these times of isolation through virtual means. We encourage artists who apply to consider how virtual connectivity has, and continues to, impact their practice. How can print, an often analog approach to creating, be reimagined and help bridge the gap between in-person learning and online.
