Overview

Rockies Repeat is a documentary, exhibit, and digital storytelling capsule that bears witness to climate change in the Canadian Rockies through the eyes of emerging artists. The Rocky Mountains landscapes are traditional lands seeped in story and culture; Rockies Repeat honours this legacy by inspiring climate action to preserve these places for future generations.

Our all-woman collective of Indigenous and settler artists travel by foot to revisit iconic sites in the Canadian Rockies painted by early Banff artist, Catharine Robb Whyte, a century ago as a bellwether for climate change.

We are seeking one to two additional Indigenous emerging artists to join our roster for our 2021 production phase. This call is funding-dependent. Funding will be confirmed in June 2021.

Description of the Artist

The ideal additions to our artist team should align with the following criteria:

• Identify as an emerging/early career artist.
• Have a connection with the Ktunaxa Nation, Secwépemc First Nations, Treaty 6, 7, and 8 Nations, and/or Regions 3 and 4 of the Métis Nation of Alberta.
• Have an interest in Rocky Mountain cultural history, climate change, storytelling, and/or water security.

Description of the Position

The Rockies Repeat team is a close-knit team of curious creators working in different mediums but united with a passion to protect Rocky Mountain landscapes for future generations. This artist will join this dynamic team of emerging artists as part of our 2021 production.

The artist(s) will travel with our creative team and production crew in summer 2021 to our field camp located along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park as part of a multi-day camp (two to four days) to hike to a series of locations to paint en plein air (dates TBD). The journey will be documented as part of a short film.

Based on the work created as part of the field camp, the artist will create one to four final pieces that will be showcased as part of a Rockies Repeat exhibition at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies at the 2022 Exposure Photography Festival. The exhibit will showcase the original works of Catharine Robb Whyte alongside paintings of the Rockies Repeat artist team to demonstrate the scale of climate and cultural change in a century.

Individual artworks created during this project remain the property of the artist.

Artist Fees

• All costs associated with the field camp will be covered (transportation/mileage, accommodation, food, and gear).
• The following fee will be paid upon completion of the project:
  1,200$ (inclusive of GST and material costs).

Accessibility

Filming will take place in a rugged outdoor environment that does not include:

1. a level entrance or ramp access to enter
2. an accessible washroom
3. wide and unobstructed pathways within the interior
4. an elevator to access multiple levels
5. automatic doors at the entrance
6. accessible parking nearby

Eligibility

• Must be 18-35 years old.
• Must currently reside within 400 km of Banff, Alberta.
• Self-identify as an emerging artist working in illustration, painting, textiles, beadwork, or mixed-media. This opportunity is not open to performance or digital media artists.
• Must actively practice their craft.
• Must identify as cis- or trans-woman.
• Must be able and willing to hike/walk in a rugged outdoor environment.

The Successful Artist(s) must:

• Work collaboratively with our creative team in a supportive and inclusive environment.
• Feel comfortable talking about their work, perspectives, and process in front of the camera, our artist team, and members of the public.
• Be open to participate in media interviews or presentations.
• Participate in a speakers panel at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies as part of the 2022 Exposure Festival (late Jan. 2022).
• Be willing to share photos of their work to share on our website and social media channels.
• Showcase selected works created as part of the Rockies Repeat project at the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies for approximately three months (Jan. – Apr. 2022).
• Provide a short bio + photo for our website and social media channels.
• Feel comfortable creating work in a plein air environment that may involve inclimate weather.
• Be open to various accommodations at our field camp (i.e. shared accommodation, cabin, hotel, camping, etc.)
• While no previous experience is necessary, the successful candidate must be open to hiking up to 10 km/day in light to moderate hiking environment.

  – Tell us about your background (if any) with plein air work or general recreational/cultural experience in an outdoor setting (e.g. hiking).
• Resume that includes your contact information – PDF (name, address, email, and website/social handles (if applicable))
• Up to 5 images of your past work
