Agnes Etherington Art Centre at Queen’s University is seeking a dynamic and motivated culture-leader to fill a new role of Associate Curator, Academic Outreach and Community Engagement. This is a full-time, permanent, continuing position.

Join us at this pivotal and transformational moment in Agnes’s future! Thanks to the incredible lead gift of $40 million (USD) from Bader Philanthropies, Inc., in 2020, we have been presented with the very rare opportunity to entirely rethink an arts facility (and museological practice!), from the ground up. Led by Agnes’s newly appointed Director and Curator, Emelie Chhangur, Agnes reimagined will amplify our capacity to foster and relay intersectional connections across the disciplines and communities that converge when a public, university-affiliated art institution is both civically minded and pedagogically driven.

Come work with us!

JOB SUMMARY:
Reporting to Agnes’s Chief Curator, Alicia Boutilier, the Associate Curator, Academic Outreach and Community Engagement is responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering programs that enhance the gallery’s integration with Queen’s University’s academic community, embracing curricular, extra-curricular and co-curricular approaches through an anti-oppression, arts-based lens.

Being both civically minded and pedagogically engaged, the Associate Curator, Academic Outreach and Community Engagement advances Agnes’s capacity to foster and relay intersectional connections across the diverse disciplines and communities that converge at Agnes. Playing a significant role, this position acts as a catalyst that brings artists, students, scholars, community groups, and different disciplinary thinking together into new social, cultural, and pedagogical effect with real and simultaneous consequence: on students’ professional and academic development, on transdisciplinary innovation, on artists’ practices, and on community well-being.

Liaising with faculty, staff and student groups throughout the university and working closely with the team of Agnes curators, the Associate Curator, Academic Outreach and Community Engagement cultivates and facilitates course-specific access to Agnes exhibitions and collections, formulating innovative strategies for active and creative use of original works of art within university curricula and more broadly, as a research and teaching resource and pedagogical tool for non-art disciplines. Adhering to high standards of museum excellence and current trends in socially-engaged artistic and curatorial practice, the incumbent will perform research, administrative and public-facing tasks to ensure that academic outreach programs and community engagement strategies are inclusive and cutting-edge, with the best possible realisation of artistic and pedagogical potential. This position supports and advances the gallery’s mandate and Queen’s University’s mission by communicating and creating opportunities for experiential learning and object-based scholarly research on-site and through the gallery’s digital platforms with a particular emphasis on Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenization.

The schedule for this position may require the incumbent to work variable hours according to program needs.
