The Department of Computational Arts in the School of the Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) invites applications for a tenure-track professorial-stream appointment in Practice-Based Computational Arts for the Engagement of Climate Crisis at the Assistant Professor level, to commence July 1, 2020. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.
A PhD, or a PhD equivalent (typically an MA/MFA with a substantial record of professional experience), related to Practice in Computational Arts, with work that emphasizes the Engagement of Climate Crisis is required. Candidates must show excellence or promise of excellence in teaching, creative research, dissemination, and service.
We seek a strong creative researcher who is engaged in a studio practice that examines climate crisis through computational media. The profile of the ideal candidate is a practising artist, creative researcher, and creative coder whose computationally-based work is disseminated or realized through online platforms and/or other cultural contexts for the purpose of community engagement.
In responding to current discourses in global crises, the candidate will have an ongoing program of research and specialization that includes interdisciplinary approaches to one or more of the following topics: computational art in the age of the Anthropocene; connecting underrepresented voices engaged in environmental concerns through technology; ubiquitous computing; telematics; surveillance; new modes of community engagement; social media and digital culture; open-source technology; sustainable technologies; ecological collapse; ethics of technology; critical play; cyber-culture or the creation of (digital) place; among others in the candidate’s area of interest. We are particularly interested in applicants whose arts practice bridges worlds by engaging in and developing technologies that integrate: indigenous understandings of the environment; the internet of things; cyber-physical systems; mixed reality; mobile computing; embedded computing; wearable computing; urban gaming; robotic art; digitally augmented perception; bio-sensing; environmental sensing; or immersive multisensory environments, among others.
The successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty of Graduate Studies. The position will involve graduate teaching and supervision, as well as undergraduate teaching. Pedagogical innovation in high priority areas such as experiential education and technology enhanced learning is preferred. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a capacity to teach and provide leadership in curriculum development in studio-based Computational Arts courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. A minimum intermediate level skill in creative coding is required. Primary teaching will take place in the Digital Media undergraduate and graduate programs, both joint programs between the Department of Computational Arts in AMPD, and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the Lassonde School of Engineering.
