Candidate: Kathryn MacDonell
Municipality: Windsor
Position: Councillor
Ward: Ward 8
What opportunities do you believe Windsor-Essex has to grow our art, culture and heritage sector?
Canadian culture seems to be the only culture not represented in Canada. Many Canadians believe our culture is a combination of all others because it has been so watered down. Opportunities to grow our art, culture and heritage are endless. Arts need to remain in schools. Festivals, areas in galleries and arts ‘Show & Sale’, could be a few places where artists can showcase their works.
How do you propose to attract or retain artists and cultural workers in your community?
Artists can form an alliance to help create events and opportunities to display their works together. Local art shows, swap meets, and consignment sales in local shops will help build public awareness.
What role do you see for arts and culture in the promotion of the region both as a destination for tourists and as a place of permanent residence for youth, families, and retirees?
Windsor and Essex County have much to offer tourists. We must build more awareness to grow this revenue stream for the cities and residents. Art and culture are key in promoting tourism to the area.
In what other ways could you use your position as an elected official to help support the arts, culture and heritage sector outside of using municipal funding?
I would appeal to local galleries to create an area where local artists can showcase their works, and offer them for sale if desired.
What is your perspective on the best ways to collaborate with other levels of government to ensure sustainability and growth for the cultural sector of our community?
The cultural sector for outside cultures is heavily promoted by the Canadian government. Locally, city council may be able to promote growth and sustainability by offering the opportunity for artists to reach out to the community and offer classes and participate in festivals. We could create a type of ‘Artists Market’ similar to the Farmers’ Markets so artists have a common market area.
How do you personally engage with arts, culture and heritage in Windsor-Essex?
I enjoy the arts and culture in the area. I would like to see our heritage get more of the spotlight.
