Pirate Life Theatre is embarking on its 7th season sailing on Toronto’s Harbour and we are seeking a number of enthusiastic performers to join our merry band of buccaneers! If you enjoy performing, working with kids, and being outdoors on the water, then this is the gig for you!

As a company of family-accessible artists, we celebrate diversity and fight for inclusive representation on our stages and in our community.  We encourage submissions from artists of all backgrounds regardless of race, gender, national origin, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

ABOUT THE COMPANY:

Pirate Life is an immersive children’s theatre company that performs interactive adventures on a 50ft pirate ship. We have been sailing the Toronto Harbour since 2014 and opened a second location in Ottawa last summer.

Each adventure begins with a series of onshore activities led by our pirate performers. Guests are transformed into a scurvy pirate crew complete with their own pirate names and face paint tattoos. Then the real fun begins when our crew sets sail on our ship, The Island Rogue, for an hour-long interactive show and treasure hunt! During our sail through the Toronto Islands, audiences are invited to decipher treasure maps, complete challenges, and fend off villainous pirates with our 24 fully-functioning water cannons!

When we are not hunting for treasure, Pirate Life also functions as a community arts hub offering up our space to artists of all creative disciplines. Over the years we have served as a venue for live music, plays, dance pieces, comedy shows, and more.

PIRATE PERFORMER DETAILS:

  • This is a non-union position compensated at a rate of $15/hour plus tips

  • Full and part-time positions are available.

  • We operate 7 days a week in July and August, and on weekends only in September and October.

  • We have a rotating cast that works in shifts, each performing up to 3 shows per day.

KEY DATES:

  • Email submissions due Saturday, June 5th

  • Virtual auditions will take place the week of June 7th

  • In-person callbacks will take place on our ship from June 12th – June 14th

  • Rehearsals begin the week of June 21st and will be a combination of virtual and in-person sessions.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

  • Comfortable interacting with and performing for children

  • Comfortable performing outdoors on a moving boat

  • Experience in children’s theatre, improv, clowning, or musical theatre is considered an asset though not a mandatory requirement.

  • Able to carry out certain duties associated with boating (including assisting in casting off/docking the ship, throwing life rings, leading safety demonstrations, etc.)

  • One of the performance tracks in our show requires the performer to operate a motorized dinghy. Pirate Life asks that all performers obtain Pleasure Craft Operator Card certification so they are able to fill all performance tracks. Pirate Life will cover the cost of this certification.

ADDITIONAL WORK OPPORTUNITIES

In the evenings our ship also functions as a community performing arts venue that plays host to artists from all creative disciplines. All of our cast have the opportunity for additional paid hours working as ship crew and/or bartenders for these events. This part of the job is extremely chill: you help the ship cast off/dock, sell drinks, and enjoy whichever performance is playing during a sunset sail! Any staff working these events must be 19+ and SmartServe Certified.

COVID SAFETY MEASURES:

We have put the following health and safety measures in place during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the well-being of our staff and guests.

  • All performers and guests are required to wear a mask on the ship.

  • Our ship’s capacity is reduced according to provincial health guidelines.

  • The audience is seated in separate, socially distanced sections of the ship.

  • All props and high-touch surfaces are sanitized between each adventure.
