Launched in 2012, the Temporary Contemporary program is an annual installation of contemporary artwork at one of Sheridan’s campuses. The program offers an opportunity for creators to incubate and implement new ideas through exchange with Sheridan’s vibrant interdisciplinary community. Previous participants have included Derek Sullivan, Roula Partheniou, Jon Sasaki, Rhonda Weppler and Trevor Mahovsky, Couzyn van Heuvelen, and Joshua Vettivelu.
The 2019-2020 Temporary Contemporary program invites proposals from artists and designers across Canada to envision and implement a public installation at our Trafalgar Campus in Oakville. We invite proposals for a site-specific artwork or series of artworks, executed in any medium (including installations, natural materials, and time-based media: sound, video, and performance) that consider the unique Trafalgar Campus community and responds to the surrounding natural landscape. Possible themes can include but are not limited to: the relationships between individuals, the institution, and environment; interstitial space or the “connections between”; thresholds, placemaking, wellness, community and connectivity. We encourage work that will provide learning opportunities and meaningful engagement with students, faculty, and staff.
SITE
Sheridan’s Trafalgar Campus is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations, Anishinaabe Nation, Huron-Wendat and the Haudenosaunee Confederacy. We are grateful for the opportunity to be working on this land, and it is our collective responsibility to honour and respect those who have gone before us, those who are here, and those who have yet to come.
Located in the lakeside city of Oakville, our Trafalgar Campus is home to more than 9,500 students. This innovative, creative, and artistic campus offers programs in animation, arts and design, advanced film and television, music theatre, business, community studies, liberal arts, applied science and technology, and more. Trafalgar is home to the Faculty of Animation, Arts and Design, which is Canada’s largest arts school with more than 6,000 students. The Campus is also distinguished for its scenic setting, which includes a community garden, wooded areas, nature trails, bridges, and streams.
Some examples of sites that applicants may consider include:
- D-Wing front entrance
- Streams and banks
- Outside of SCAET building
- Campus trails
Other locations on campus may be considered. All final selection of sites and project specifications will be made in consultation with the Facilities Operations and Sustainability department and Occupational Health & Safety Services.
FACILITIES + RESOURCES
The selected artist will have access to facilities and resources at Sheridan’s Creative Campus Galleries and the Faculty of Animation, Arts & Design (FAAD) while undertaking their project. The proposed artwork may be produced in FAAD’s Oakville studios, which include a wide range of technical resources and facilities. Within a defined scope, Sheridan can offer some support in developing and building the work. Some examples of resources to consider:
- Crafts Studios: Glass, Textiles, Woodworking, Ceramics, Industrial Design
- Advanced technologies such as immersive and augmented realities
- Digital Fabrication technologies (3D printing, laser, CNC)
- High-end computer labs with color calibrated monitors for editing
- Recording studios with access to Foley sound effects
- Photo studios with white and green infinity coves
- MIDI lab with surround sound
- Film and Television studio
ENGAGING STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY
Our selection panel seeks projects with a holistic approach to learning through the creative process. A key component of the Temporary Contemporary program will be to meaningfully engage students, faculty, and technologists at the Trafalgar Campus. Please identify in your project description how you will involve students in the process of creating and installing your work. We would like to understand how you would inspire and guide students through sharing your practices, journey, and experience as a professional artist. Some possibilities could include workshops, or participation in the conceptualization and fabrication of your work.
Additionally, between July-August 2019, the artist may have the opportunity to engage students taking part in Sheridan’s Public Creativity Studio, a 14-week Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) initiative led by FAAD, which will focus on reimagining Trafalgar campus’s B-Wing main entrance and public spaces.
PUBLIC TALK
The artist who is selected to implement their project at Sheridan will participate in a public talk that engages with Sheridan and its communities about what was learned and what was shared through the creation of the work.
SELECTION PROCESS + BUDGET
The selection panel will identify a shortlist of three proposals from the applicant pool. We will invite the shortlisted artists to Sheridan to tour our facilities and meet our panelists. During their visit, each candidate will present their proposal and respond to questions from the panel.
The three shortlisted candidates will be awarded an honorarium of $750 for travel expenses and time. The final successful candidate will be provided with a $25,000 budget to cover all expenses of the project, including all artist fees (for exhibition and presentation), materials (for production of work and public programming), fabrication, installation, technicians, documentation, transportation expenses and all other related costs.
Our selection panel will be comprised of members of Sheridan’s Faculty of Animation, Arts, and Design, Creative Campus Galleries, Centre for Indigenous Learning and Support, Sheridan Student Union, and other members of the community.
DURATION OF EXHIBITION AND OWNERSHIP
The finished artwork will be exhibited at the Trafalgar Campus for a four-month period, after which it will become the property of the artist. It is the artist’s responsibility to arrange for dismantling and removal of the artwork.
