Dr. Jennifer Willet, an artist who has worked for 20+ years in the field of bioart, engaging hands-on biotech protocols towards the production of contemporary art. She will present her ongoing research across the arts, sciences, and humanities focusing on the notion that biotechnology can be reimagined as a technology of love. This concept will be applied to interspecies relationships in the laboratory, institutional bureaucracy and lab management techniques, and the design and construction of creative biotech laboratory spaces. Willet will highlight several artworks including When Microbes Dream, a giant wall installation that dwarfs the human viewer giving visitors a glimpse of imagined microbial perspective.
A large portion of Willet’s work is in collaboration with scientists at all career stages producing unexpected outcomes across the disciplines. In addition to producing Bioartworks, Willet studies the value of art/science collaborations. Willet will introduce audience members to a new public engagement series charting the value of radical interdisciplinarity in the lab called ART + SCIENCE = WOW!
Dr. Jennifer Willet is a Canada Research Chair in Art, Science, and Ecology, a Professor in the School of Creative Arts at the University of Windsor, and Director of INCUBATOR Art Lab, founded in 2009.
