THE SUSTAINABLE ARTS FOUNDATION IS OFFERING $5000 AWARDS TO WRITERS AND ARTISTS WITH CHILDREN. THE MONEY CAN BE USED FOR COSTS SUCH AS CHILD CARE, WORKSPACES, NEW EQUIPMENT, RESEARCH AND TRAVEL.

The Sustainable Arts Foundation was founded in 2010 with the aim of encouraging parents to continue pursuing their creative passion, and to rekindle it in those who may have let it slide.

In 2020 the foundation will award US$5000 each to twenty artists and writers who have demonstrated excellence in their disciplines. The awards are offered as unrestricted cash, and recipients can use the funds as they see fit.

To be eligible to apply for a grant you must have at least one child under the age of 18.  Applicants can be based anywhere in the world and there are no citizenship restrictions.

Writers may apply in one of the following categories:

  • Creative Nonfiction
  • Early and Middle Grade Readers
  • Fiction
  • Graphic Novel/Graphic Memoir
  • Illustrated Children’s Books
  • Illustrated Children’s Books (Text Only)
  • Long Form Journalism
  • Poetry
  • Young Adult Fiction

Visual artists are also eligible able to apply.

Since 2016 the organisers have committed to offering half of its awards to applicants of colour. Further information about this initiative is available on the Foundation’s website.

The program has a $20 application fee. The organisers advise that 100% of this fee goes to our jurors, who are all parent artists and writers themselves. Charging this fee insures that at least two jurors will review each application and be compensated for their work. Applications may contact the Sustainable Arts Foundation for assistance if the fee would prevent them from applying.

Applications open on Saturday 1 February and close on Friday 28 February. For further information visit the Sustainable Arts Foundation website.
