The Birth of Control
January 13 @ 7:00 pm

Please join us 7pm, Saturday, January 13th at Common Ground Gallery for the opening reception of “The Birth of Control”, a group exhibit featuring new work by Windsor based artists Judy Chappus, Sandie Collins, Stephen Gibb and Rebecca Draisey.

The aforementioned artists have recently formed a collective dubbed “The Control Group”, and have all had the distinct pleasure of meeting at the grimy and deliciously untethered environs of the Lebel building (the former University of Windsor Visual Arts building). They have joined forces to explore and share with each other experiences and discoveries from the past 30 years, and this group exhibit is the beginning of that conversation/collaboration.

Judy Chappus is a multi media artist and writer. She explores the connections between feminism, mysticism, and the environment. Inspired by ancient wisdom and ritual, she raises questions about how our past informs our present.

Sandie Collins uses printmaking and drawing with other mediums such as oil pastels to explore colour, depth, and texture within her multi-layered linoleum prints. She has an uncanny ability to devise imagery that is singular, primal yet sophisticated.

Stephen Gibb brings a sense of comic relief to the group – delving into the existential turmoil inherent in the allegorical lives of comic book and nursery rhyme characters.

Rebecca is a colourist who blends abstract expressionism and figurative psychology, (while maintaining a touch of humour and optimism) as a primal response to the hegemonic roar of contemporary society.

“The Birth of Control” runs until February 2. Visiting hours are from Monday – Saturday, 8:30am – 4:30pm.
