Can’t Scare Me Back

“Can’t Scare Me Back” is a community-based multimedia project by local artists Cole Fortier and Luke Maddaford. The project aims to present local stories in a way that reflects the experiences of Queer residents. Exploring our regional Queer culture, and challenging the perceptions around queerness outside of large urban centres, we seek to highlight Queer joy, pain, anger, and resilience.

Using community-submitted coming out stories, we will produce a small publication with written stories, a radio presentation of oral stories, and a website featuring written, oral, and video stories. The project will be launched during Windsor-Essex Pride Fest as a small exhibition. Acting as both an archive and a community activator, this project aims to reflect our community and challenge the way it is perceived.

We have partnered with CJAM FM for the audio production and presentation, and are working with the Arts Council of Windsor and Region to host the exhibition. As the project continues, we intend to bring on more community partnerships and sponsorships, focusing on creating a project for our community, by our community.

 

We are currently seeking submissions from 2S-LGBTQIA+ Windsor-Essex community members to be included in the project. Submissions can be anonymous and you will only be contacted if you choose to be.
 
We are interested in the many ways our community has come out, reflecting on the experience of first coming out and the experiences of coming out every time after that. Submissions may be joyous, depressing, awkward, boring, etc. We are looking to represent all varieties of experience.
