As an artist-run centre, the Inc. empowers artists of all career levels to take risks with their contemporary visual arts practices and present their work in a critical context. Our exhibitions, publications, and special projects offer education and mentorship, facilitate regional and national dialogue, and encourage collaboration, conversation, and critical inquiry. The Inc. aspires to connect with our changing communities by taking an intersectional approach, identifying and removing systemic barriers, and supporting artists and art practices that reflect the people of our region.

Executive Director

Term: Full-time, permanent. Workdays are Tuesdays-Saturdays; evening and weekend work is required for committee meetings and events.
Compensation: $25.50/hour at 35 hours/week, two weeks of paid vacation per year.
Benefits: Employer-paid health benefits following a three-month probationary period.

As Executive Director for Hamilton Artists Inc., the successful candidate will conduct the operational, developmental, and financial management of the organization, in accordance with its strategic and operational plan. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Programming Director in non-hierarchical roles to oversee the staff and operations of the organization and will report to the Board of Directors. The successful candidate will receive training and professional development opportunities.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a not-for-profit art gallery or equivalent administrative experience.
  • A diploma, degree or relevant experience in arts administration, not-for-profit management, business administration, or fundraising and development preferably within the arts and cultural sector.
  • Ability to create and manage budgets, audits, and payroll; bookkeeping experience considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated commitment to centering anti-oppression and anti-racism in all aspects of their work, guided by frameworks of equity and intersectionality.
  • Experience with grant writing for arts councils and foundations; familiarity with CADAC considered an asset.
  • Experience cultivating strategic sponsorships, partnerships, and fundraising opportunities.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with the Programming Director and Board of Directors.
  • Supervisory experience working with staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Experience with membership management and recruitment.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, attention to detail, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Computer skills (PC), Quickbooks, Microsoft Office, GSuite, Social Media. Experience with Hootsuite, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and MailChimp considered an asset.
  • Solid knowledge of Canadian contemporary art, as well as an understanding of the Hamilton and regional arts community.

Public Programs Coordinator

For this position, we are actively seeking a person with lived experience of systemic oppression, including first-hand knowledge of the barriers many people experience when accessing programs and opportunities. While education and work experience will be considered, the hiring committee will prioritize the expertise of relevant lived experience. This reflects the vision and values outlined in our 2018-2023 Strategic Plan, as follows: We aspire to connect with our changing communities by taking an intersectional approach, identifying and removing systemic barriers, and supporting artists and art practices that reflect the people of our region. Supervised by the Executive and Programming Directors, the Public Programs Coordinator will help to deliver a range of public programming, foster ongoing community partnerships, develop communications, and enhance membership, volunteer and visitor relations with a focus on equitable and accessible models. The successful candidate will receive training and professional development opportunities.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • A willingness to develop new job-related skills through mentorship or other professional development opportunities.
  • Experience in building and facilitating relationships with various community groups with sensitivity and care.
  • Lived experience of systemic oppression and a commitment to centering equitable, anti-oppressive, and anti-racist frameworks in all aspects of their work.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong research, critical thinking, attention to detail, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently in a busy office environment, organize and prioritize work effectively.
  • Experience working with artists, interns, volunteers, donors, and/or the general public.
  • Computer skills (PC), Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, GSuite and Social Media.
  • An understanding of the Hamilton and regional community and its growing needs.
