Calling all artists, collectives, and arts organizations! The City of Toronto is now accepting submissions to the Open Call and Independent Projects Programs for Nuit Blanche Toronto 2019.

This free, all-night celebration of contemporary art attracts more than one million local and out of town visitors to a diverse program of curated exhibitions, commissioned installations, special projects and talks. Applications and application guidelines for the Open Call and Independent Projects Programs are now available at www.toronto.ca/nbto.

Open Call Project Program

Each year, the City of Toronto works with curators to commission new works as part of Nuit Blanche Toronto. Curators will select up to four projects through the open call process in response to the curatorial vision of their exhibitions, which will be funded and produced by the City of Toronto. Artists based in Toronto, Canada or internationally, at any stage of their career, are strongly encouraged to apply.

The online application is available now. Submissions are due by Monday, February 4, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Independent Projects Program

Nuit Blanche Toronto welcomes proposals for self-produced projects by professional artists, collectives, galleries, cultural and educational institutions, neighbourhoods and not-for-profit organizations as part of the Independent Projects Program. These projects can take place anywhere across the city of Toronto and proposals should respond to the 2019 event theme, Continuum. Applications will be reviewed by the Independent Projects Selection Committee, composed of members of the Nuit Blanche External Advisory and invited representatives from Toronto’s contemporary arts community.

New for 2019, successful applicants to the Independent Projects Program will receive an honorarium of $1,500 to offset costs related to producing their project, such as artist fees, staffing, and equipment rental.

Also new for 2019, the City of Toronto is pleased to announce an exciting partnership with the Toronto Arts Council, which provides the opportunity for Independent Projects Program applicants to receive up to $20,000 through the TAC “Animating Toronto Streets – Nuit Blanche” pilot program. Eligible applicants must be Toronto-based professional artists, collectives, or not-for-profit organizations, and projects must be proposed specifically for the public right of way, which includes Toronto streets, sidewalks and laneways. Applications will be reviewed by the Independent Projects Selection Committee including a TAC Grant Program Manager. Final approval of the Committee’s recommended applications will be made by TAC’s Board of Directors and TAC will administer the grants to recipients.

The online application to the Independent Projects Program, which includes the TAC Animating Toronto Streets – Nuit Blanche stream, is available now. Submissions are due by Thursday, February 14, 2019 at 11:59 p.m. EST.

Information Sessions

Information sessions are run by City of Toronto staff and TAC grant officers in order to provide an overview and details of each program. There will also be an opportunity for attendees to ask questions. It is recommended that prospective applicants attend one of the information session before finalizing their proposals. Nuit Blanche Toronto 2019 Curators and Theme

Nuit Blanche Toronto 2019 will feature two City-produced exhibitions led by curators Ashley McKenzie-Barnes with “Queens and Kings of Scarborough” and Layne Hinton and Rui Pimenta with “Creation : Destruction”. 2019 curators and artists will reflect on the event-wide theme of “Continuum”. In a world that feels increasingly polarized, the theme of “Continuum” responds to the interconnected and often contradictory paradoxes of life in the changing city.
