Through the Eye | Katrina Sockett
June 28 - July 5
Reception: June 30th from 5pm-7pm
This collection focuses on oil paintings relating to abstracted memories, interpretations of the past and the blending of natural landscapes and figures with distorted and irregular elements. These works transcend the recollection of tangible and permanent events, events in which I would previously deconstruct with a level of austerity that their subsequent remembrance became solely a means of punishment. Unsavory moments became inscrutable, forming a vacancy between my past and present, void of the desires, thoughts and complexities that shape a willful mind.
Through reading William Blake’s work, in which he makes a point to see things not with the mortal eye, but instead “through” the mind’s eye, highlighting the importance of imagination, I decided to showcase the confusing, shameful and irregular elements that are tied to my past through artistic sensibilities. Allowing myself the freedom to recollect these spots of time through my paintings, rather than suppressing them through rigid analysis, has given me a better comprehension of my memories, as they are no longer stuck in ‘virtual’ fabricated scenarios, but in a state of constant imaginative power, where ambiguity is the driving force of memory. With the mind’s eye, all limbs, earth and light flow endlessly into one another, reconstructing the essence of my past rather than its literal form.
Bio:
Katrina Sockett is a 25-year-old emerging artist from Windsor, Ontario and a recent graduate of the School of Creative Art. Throughout her studies, Katrina developed a style of painting in which she uses vibrant, neon colours in controlled, thin layers to evoke a translucent effect in her pieces. The result is a series of glowing works that fill the canvas with movement and depth. This recent collection displays natural scenes and shapes juxtaposed with the aforementioned translucent, neon effect to create a sense of dissonance within familiarity. These pieces will be displayed at the Artspeak Gallery between June 28 to July 5 , with the opening reception taking place on Tuesday, June 30th from 4-5pm.
