Sound Poetry Workshop with Karl Jirgens at ArtSpeak gallery
October 8, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

On Saturday October 8th, from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, the ACWR will be hosting a free sound poetry workshop that will explore Windsor’s unique sonic landscape.

Sound poetry is an artistic form that bridges literary arts and musical composition in which the phonetic aspects of human speech are foregrounded instead of more conventional semantic and syntactic values.

During the workshop participants will be given an introduction to sound poetry, including the work of some established sound poets, and will be invited to create sound poems based on a variety of sounds, including those coming from motor vehicles.

The results of the workshop will be displayed between Oct. 15th to Nov. 15th on the New Voices billboard.

No previous experience writing poetry, or composing music, is necessary to participate in the workshop.

This workshop will be offered by Dr. Karl Jirgens and ACWR staff.

Dr. Karl Jirgens is a Professor Emeritus with the University of Windsor, former English Department Head, and former Chair of the Creative Writing Program. Jirgens is also an 8th degree black belt in the Korean martial art of Tae Kwon Do, and was the editor/publisher of Rampike, an international journal of art, writing, and theory (1979-2016). Jirgens is the author of five books (Coach House, Mercury, ECW and The Porcupine’s Quill Presses). His latest collection of short-fiction, The Razor’s Edge (The Porcupine’s Quill Press) was released August, 2022.
