Classic Canadian Romantic Comedy to Play at University of Windsor in July
After a dramatic 60th anniversary season, the students of University Players and the School of Dramatic Art are excited to bring you a delightfully witty summer theatre production. The Inspired Acting Lab at the School of Dramatic Art will present David French’s beautiful, touching romantic comedy, Salt-Water Moon, in the Studio Theatre on July 11, 12, and 13.
One of Canadian theatre’s most beloved plays, Salt-Water Moon tells the story of Mary Snow and Jacob Mercer and their humorous road to love. On a charming moon-lit night in 1926, eighteen-year-old Jacob has returned from Toronto to the tiny outport community of Coley’s Point, Newfoundland, hoping to win back his former sweetheart, seventeen-year-old Mary, who has become engaged to the wealthy Jerome MacKenzie. But Mary will not be easily wooed. A classic love story filled with humour, the wit so characteristic of Newfoundlanders, and the magic of a moon-filled night under the stars.
The rehearsal period will explore the use of unique exercises in Fantastic Realism, developed in the Inspired Acting Lab, led by Professor Lionel Walsh as part of his creative research at the University of Windsor. “The goal of Fantastic Realism is give the performance a sense of exciting theatricality while remaining grounded in truth,” says Walsh. “The result is a compelling performance that draws the audience into the experience with the actors.” The cast, recent UWindsor grad, Sofie Jarvis, and Wayne State grad, James Kern, were part of the team of students who helped develop the exercises, and are very excited to apply them to the rehearsal and performance of Salt-Water Moon when it really counts – before a live audience!
