Journey to Freedom Travelling Harriet Tubman Sculpture and Freedom Walk 2026 Tour in Sandwich

The Harriet Tubman Journey to Freedom statue, depicting the famed abolitionist on a harrowing rescue mission, is coming to Olde Sandwich Towne. The large bronze sculpture, designed in 2019 by artist Wesley Wofford, evokes the “ceaseless struggle for freedom, and will serve as a focal point for participants to reflect, engage and unite.”

From Sandy Spring, Maryland to Niagara Falls, St. Catharines, Toronto, Guelph, Fergus, Chatham, North Buxton, Dresden, Lakeshore, Windsor (Olde Sandwich Towne), and finally Amherstburg, #FreedomWalk2026, a tour showcasing the Journey to Freedom sculpture, is a modern-day retracing of the Underground Railroad to Canada. This journey is commemorating the brave freedom-seekers or self-liberators, the abolitionists, and their secret networks. The walk team, led by historian Anthony Michael Cohen—who first walked the route in 1996—has trekked 750 miles by foot, boat and rail using modes of transport of the original freedom seekers from Maryland to Niagara Falls, New York, and is now making their way through SW Ontario via motorized transportation.

July 10th Windsor – Sandwich First Baptist Church, 3652 Peter Street, 3:00-8:00 pm, hosted by the Essex County Black Historical Research Society and Sandwich First Baptist Church. Free event. All are welcome! There will also be live music, history highlights, poetry, and hip-hop.
