Dry Goods Gallery is happy to announce the presentation of a new work by local artist Alejandro Tamayo:
Fog sculpture for Dry Goods Gallery
April 15-29, 2025
Closing reception: Monday April 28, 5:00-7:00 at Chance Coffee 1012 Drouillard Rd
The exhibition is the first in a programmed series presented by Dry Goods Gallery, entitled “Liminal City” which issued a call for proposals asking artists to respond to and explore themes of liminality, ambiguity, imagination, and transformation as they relate to the unique spatial, environmental, social, cultural, and historical boundary occupied by the city of Windsor. The project aims to encourage conversations around how this inherent liminality informs and shapes our collective narrative, identity, and mythology, and trajectory.
Through Fog sculpture for Dry Goods Gallery the public will be able to experience the passage of time as the gallery becomes fully covered with fog, as well as the time it takes to fully dissipate. When the fog will vanish, what remains is only the memory of the event in the viewer’s mind, similar to what happens with a piece of music.
The work addresses fog both as a sculptural material with unique properties (like a gas, it has indeterminate shape and indeterminate volume), and as a metaphor. Fog carries an element of mystery, an anticipation that something is about to happen. It obscures our vision and our thoughts. When we have a “foggy mind,” we cannot think clearly. It embodies a “gray zone” between reality and unreality, uncertainty about the future, and foreboding, death, or transition – a veil which must lift before revealing something new.
Tamayo’s practice explores contemporary approaches to abstraction, viewer’s perception and participation, and the passage of time. Tamayo’s website.
The Liminal City series is generously funded by the City of Windsor’s Arts, Culture, and Heritage Fund 2024. It curates a series of four exhibitions by local artists which will be presented in succession between April and September 2025.
Dry Goods Gallery, located in a former retail display window in Ford City, is a street-facing window gallery committed to providing an inclusive and community-focused space for emerging visual arts and experimental exhibitions.
