Entropic Drift Art Show Reception

This site-specific work started as a miniature exploration of line, colour and material responsiveness. Fluid mediums were layered onto paper, allowing the pigments to merge and bleed unpredictably across its surface. Once the composition dried, the paper was cut into fragments and dispersed.

The gestures of fragmenting and reassembling were then translated to a larger scale using industrial materials and tools. In this expanded iteration, fragments occupy space by responding to walls, floors and light while carrying traces of the original composition. The process and materials invite moments of unpredictability during their repetitive applications. Through reconfiguration, the work drifts toward disorder while interacting with its environment.

Sarah Smitherman is an interdisciplinary artist from Miami, Florida whose practice integrates drawing, collage, installation and photography to produce intermedial projects. With the support of numerous awards and grants her work has been exhibited across Canada, Europe, and the United States.
