Doug Jarvis Research Production Residency

Observe and interact with Victoria, BC based artist Doug Jarvis as he engages a new project “The Doughnut Eaters”. Based in the WW1 doughnut story that he has been exploring over the last year. The Doughnut Eaters looks at the action of volunteers who made doughnuts for American soldiers in northern France behind the front lines. The volunteers were alleged to have started making doughnuts using found or hand-crafted implements (shell casings, wine bottles, food tins) and frying them initially in a soldiers helmet.

Doug is interested in how this action of care triggered nostalgia and senses of home for the soldiers and how this may or may not relate to how our second stomachs, or belly brains, may or may not operate.
