Why worry about being watched if you have nothing to hide?

This rhetorical question is often used to support mass surveillance: a practice in which a large portion of the population is monitored to observe their activities and behaviour. While it has been argued that surveillance helps to counter crime and keep civilians safe, it has also been argued that it tampers with freedom and fosters a culture of judgment and fear. As this practice of surveillance continues to grow, we ask: does this constant watching pose more of a benefit or a risk to our community’s well-being?

On Thursday, January 27, from 7:00 pm – 8:15 pm, join us for Does Surveillance = Safety? A Community Conversation over Zoom. We encourage engagement and respectful, curious questions about the topic of this conversation, and also encourage attendees to read our code of conduct for more information about the norms of engagement for our panel discussion. We look forward to welcoming our community into this important conversation!
