CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: Waawiiyaatanong BIPOC Artist in Residence

February 24, 2021 @ 8:00 am - March 22, 2021 @ 11:59 pm

Event Website/Tickets

The Waawiiyaatanong BIPOC Artist Residency was built to allow local BIPOC artists in our community to share their stories. This year Artcite is calling for artists to explore the intersectional issues of environmental racism and its effects on not only our communities, but the region as a whole. These issues can be defined by the presence of environmental injustice which occurs within a racial context. The pervasive presence of institutional racism in so-called Canada has led to instances of environmental racism, through policy and land development, land appropriation, water divisions, urban development and resource extraction- and many of these projects disproportionally affect First Nations communities (Mascarenhas, 2016). Artcite is seeking exciting new projects which consider the ways in which environment and racial identity play a critical role in conversations about labour, public health, recreation, housing, activism, culture and history.

This year, Black, Indigenous and POC artists from the region are invited to create new work, supported by Artcite Inc. through our residency program. The successful applicant will have access to the Artcite gallery to utilize as studio space for the month of May. They will receive an honourarium of $800, as well as, have the opportunity to select a guest mentor for a virtual studio visit, and the Artcite Inc. staff will professionally document the artists’ work in the Artcite space. Applications are due by March 22nd, end of day.

Applications must include:

-Project Statement

-5-10 images high quality (300dpi)

Please send your completed application to imogen@artciteinc.ca with the subject line “Artcite Residency”.
