Workshops by Julia Fabricius:
An important part of Julia Fabricius’ artistic practice is offering bookbinding workshops and assisting others with their creative work. These acts in themselves can be understood as a kind of performance. Julia will offer various bookmaking workshop formats, all relating to the works in her exhibition, Performing Instructions. Julia’s work incorporates the idea that instructions can be passed on to visitors to create a kind of collective knowledge that extends beyond the exhibition space; something that is long-lived and that might plant a seed for the creation of new book works.

The origami book is a playful and foldable paper object with a hard cover. During the workshop, participants will learn how to fold, glue and make a hard cover using bookbinding cloth. The origami book format is perfect for drawings, concrete poetry or a book of shorter text. The origami book is part of Julia Fabricius’ exhibition, with printed instructions on how to make it.

We will begin by warming up with the zine fold – one single paper folded and cut into a tiny booklet, followed by the saddle stitch — a simple, beautiful thread binding. We’ll also experiment with making a collective accordion book.
French Link Stitch Notebook
Saturday June 13th, 2:00 pm-4:00pm
Participants: 6-8
Price: $40; Students with a valid ID: $30.00 All materials are included in this price.
No prior bookbinding knowledge/experience is needed, all levels are welcome to join.
The French link stitch is a book binding technique where needle and thread are used to bind signatures of paper together. The aim of the workshop is to carefully go through the steps of preparation, such as folding, making a guide, using a hole punch and binding together. The French link stitch is featured in the exhibition as a performance that was executed by the artist, Julia Fabricius, during an 8 hour long binding session. The workshop thus invites visitors to gain practical understanding and insight of how Julia’s art work was made. Participants will leave with a notebook with an open spine that they have created.
