Amy Friend: Assorted Boxes of Ordinary Life
September 16, 2022 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

The Thames Art Gallery, Chatham, On. is delighted to present internationally renowned photographer Amy Friend: Assorted Boxes of Ordinary Life.

The exhibition runs from September 9 – November 5 with a special ARTIST RECEPTION and OPENING CELEBRATION, Friday September 16 at 7pm.
The artist will be in attendance and refreshments will be served. Free, family friendly event.

Friend’s journey through this body of work began with an inherited box of small objects. The objects were assembled with care as keepsakes or mementos of a life now gone, and even if the circumstances bringing them together are now past or unrecognized, they suggested stories that live on in the artists own imagination as both fact and fiction.

Amy Friend is a Canadian artist (b. Windsor, ON) with a roster of national and international exhibitions. Select exhibitions include: Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize Exhibition (UK), Gexto Photofestival (Spain), Bildhalle Gallery (Switzerland), DongGang Photography Museum (Korea), Mosteiro de Tibães at the Encontros Da Imagem, (Portugal), ASPA Street Photography (Alghero, Sarginia), Beyond Boundaries, Aperture Gallery, (USA), Recits Festival, Abbaye da Silvacane, (France), and Rodman Hall Art Centre, (Canada). She has been awarded grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. In 2017, Friend published the monograph, Stardust, with L’Artiere Publishing, Italy. She presented her work in 2018 at ParisPhoto with incamera Galerie and was selected for the Elles X exhibition, curated by Fannie Escoulen, showcasing the work of 100 women photographers, from the beginning of photography to today. Her newest body of work, Tiny Tears Fill an Ocean, will be presented at ParisPhoto in the Fall of 2022. Friend’s work is held in several collections including the Orestiadi Foundation (Gibellina, Sicily), Hermes Collection (Paris, France), Onassis Foundation (Athens, Greece), City of St. Catharines, (St. Catharines, Canada) and York University (Toronto, Canada).

Amy Friend works with family photographs, super 8 film and found objects to explore the rich ambiguities of the life we inhabit, searching for clues to our sense of identity and our ability to acquire greater purchase on the ground beneath our feet.
