A Magic March Break
Photography by Kelly Reyes
During this years March break events, the Arts Council Windsor and Region partnered with the Windsor Community Museum and Windsor Magic Circle Ring 116.
Those who attended had the opportunity to learn magic while having fun, two themes that were easy to combine. The children explored the wonders of magic at the Windsor
Community Museum in downtown Windsor which is also currently hosting a history of the Magic Circle Ring 116 Exhibit.
Photography by Kelly Reyes
It is there the children learned to incorporate the fun of learning the steps and performing magic tricks taught by local magicians and ended the week with an exciting Magic show that was open to the community.
Thanks to all who attented!

Kordazone Theatre
KORDA TAKES SHAKESPEARE OUT OF THIS WORLD!
Korda Artistic Productions is preparing to boldly go where no double bill has gone before: on April 8, Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors and Titus Andronicus will open, for a 2 weekend run. But the production has a twist: the plays, each pared down to about an hour and a quarter, are being presented as long lost episodes of everyone’s favourite sci-fi TV show! In The Comedy of Errors, and transporter accident splits the captain and his ensign into two aler egos, and then beams the halves down to two warring planets. Will the ever-logical first officer be able to reunite them before it’s too late? In Titus Andronicus, an ancient alien culture’s warped sense of honour leads to horror and bloody tragedy, as a wronged enemy queen takes her gruesome vengence on a great warrior and his family. Broad farce and Senecan tragedy, both on the same program: a challenge for any acting company, but Korda has never shied away from a challenge.
The Comedy of Errors and Titus Andronicus play April 8, 9, 14, 15 & 16 at 8:00, and Sunday April 10 at 2:00. Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for students & seniors; Thursday April 14 is Pay What You Can. Tickets are available at the door, and at Nancy Johns Gallery and Framing.
The Kordazone Theatre is located at 2520 Seminole in Windsor, one block east of Walker Road.
Check www.kordazone.com or call 519-562-3394 for more info. Members of the press who wish to attend the make-up tutorial are asked to please let us know in advance.

NAP Youth Girls
A progressive and creative way of looking at settlement is by way of engaging in theatric performance and other art forms. The Newcomer Art Project (NAP) at Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women (WWWWIW) has been dealing in just this area for a little bit than over a year.Settlement through the Arts, describe Chris Rabideau, Drama Facilitator at the NAP Program, is a powerful vehicle that awakens newcomer youth girls to themselves and to each other. Rabideau, also a high school supply teacher at many schools in the city and an advocate for under privileged youth, has been working with different disenfranchised groups of high school aged students helping them tackle issues of bullying, racism and xenophobia. He does all this through using the technique of process drama which assists in drawing from their hurtful experiences. After talking about their stories and collecting them the group embarks upon writing these in play form and then acting them out, engaging audiences and bringing social justice issues to the forefront.
What does this have to do with settlement you might ask? It builds confidence, teamwork, critical thinking, friendship and language skills amongst many others, answers NAP Coordinator, Sophia Bittar.
Just past its 1st birthday, NAP has already had 4 groups of newcomer girls, about 100 girls total, go through this process. NAP’s latest performance,Flight 13 will be performed twice at 2:00 PM and 7 PM on Saturday, April 16th at the Downtown Mission Theatre on Victoria Ave. The performance is about a newcomer girl faced with bullying. It promises to be an exceptional show.
Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women is a non-for-profit settlement agency assisting newcomer and refugee women and their families become full and participating members of Canadian society. For almost 30 years, WWWWIW has been responsive to the needs of newcomers in the Windsor community and proactive in how settlement services are run, using innovative ways to support newcomers in their integration process.
The NAP program is a cutting edge project that promises to empower newcomer youth girls (age 14 – 24 years) through the arts. NAP features homework support in both Canada’s official languages, community building and art initiative programming, assisting newcomer youth girls reach their fullest potential.
This ISAP Youth Program is Funded by the Government of Canada through Citizenship and Immigration.

A fur-covered shelf! One of 60 in the show!
“ARTSEEN 13 – SHELF LIFE”
60 artists have hung their shelf-creations on Artcite’s walls – working the idea and the materiality of “the shelf” in a show that pushes the boundaries of the creative process:
Objets d’art, objets d’artiste, Duchampian “ready-mades” (that make ‘dada’ proud),SHELVED ideas! Think OUTSIDE the shelf! Think ON the shelf! Think ABOUT the shelf!
In past years, Artcite’s ARTSEEN was a showcase of experimental and ‘site-specific’ art works held in in old factory spaces and other decommissioned” buildings.
Windsor and Detroit area artists presented new and in-process works in all media (visual art, video, multi-media, installation and performance), working with the themes and materials suggested by the sites. (See www.artcite.ca/seen.html for past Artseens)
Due to difficulties in securing donated vacant building spaces ( as well as utilities, heat and insurance costs), Artseen was “shelved” for the last 5 years. But now Artseen is back (!) with a more intimate and miniaturized theme: For our 2011 ARTSEEN (our lucky 13th!), “All the ARTSEEN world is a shelf!” (…on the wall…at Artcite).
We made up a pile of 23″ x 9″ pine shelves and distributed them to area artists to turn into original works for ARTSEEN 13 – SHELF LIFE! The shelves are IN, and hanging on the walls!
Visitors can buy one (or many) of the shelf-works! “Artseen 13 – SHELF LIFE” is an exhibition AND a gallery FUN(d)raiser(R)(TM), so many of the shelves are up for grabs!
See ALL the shelves on our Flick set for the show:

Known for utilizing a low-key palette and print driven media, the artists are free to produce original exhibitions that adhere to both their own aesthetic and a site-specific context.
“RTST sees no borders and operates between Canada and the United States.
We live and work in Vancouver, Canada and New York City, USA; currently located in Brooklyn, NY.”
For the “Abilene Paradox”, the Vancouver-New York City based artist collective RTST
creates a multi-room environment examining the common ground of cultural workers and trade unions.

Talking to architects, fashion experts and artists, he investigates how Picasso’s influence, particularly that of his Cubist work, continues to pervade modern life today, in the shape of buildings, interior design, clothes and of course contemporary art.

Everything we do, every journey we make is referenced to water.
Water is the background narrative to our lives. Water has been at the centre of the story of this country from its earliest history.
Beyond being an absolute necessity for life, water has meaning in all of our lives. To a fisher it is a source of livelihood. To a sailor it is a highway of endless possibilities. To a poet and an artist it is a subject of contemplation and reflection.
In this Exhibition three artists explore their personal and cultural relationship with water. In Elaine Carr’s work, water and land is shown from different perspectives, which exist simultaneously, are mediated by memory and transformed. For A.G. Smith, being near the water and on the water and building the vessels that make that possible have always been important in his life. In Barbara Murawskiʼs work, a play with water images and water idioms, endeavours to stimulate a sense of commonality with the viewer.

Another Year – 6:30 pm
United Kingdom; 2010; Director: Mike Leigh; 129 minutes; English
Presented at seasonal intervals, making up the year of the title, the action is set largely in the suburban London home of Gerri (Ruth Sheen) and her husband Tom (Jim Broadbent). They seem to have the perfect, mutually supportive marriage, but their cozy situation belies that of those around them. Tom’s boyhood friend Ken (Peter Wight) is an overweight alcoholic who hates his job and his life; and Mary (Lesley Manville), Gerri’s work colleague, is a glass-half-full depressive.
An eloquent story of narrowing options and fading hopes in life’s later years, Leigh addresses themes of class, family and depression with humour and humanity. Loaded with excellent dialogue, compelling characters and a director with a knack of making the ordinary extraordinary, Another Yearis a triumph.
Adults $10 per film (available on-line or at the door)
or $15 for both films (at the door only)
Students $6 (current valid ID required)

Call for Artists: Boblo Island
Boblo Island has enchanted visitors from all walks of life for generations. Whether it is to take in the view, hike the trails or enjoy a meal at our marina, Boblo Island leaves a lasting impression.
With increasing interest as a tourist destination, Boblo Island Development has decided to add a new feature this summer The Island Gallery. Located across from the Island Restaurant is a small air conditioned enclosed gazebo; perfect to feature a small collection of art, jewelry, photographs, glass work, pottery etc. The inventory will be sold on consignment by our staff for a percentage of the sale. There will be no rental fee for our first year.
Every weekend we will have a Featured Artist who can set a larger display on the elevated deck outside the gazebo. The Featured Artist will be advertised through the Boblo Island Marina website and our printed Boblo Island Activity Guide.
There will be more opportunity for exposure during the many festivals Amherstburg hosts, since Boblo Island Marina has become a gateway to the small town. Besides the Garden Tour, Heritage Festival, Wine Festival and Art By The River we will be drawing crowds for our own Classic Car Show and Mardi Gras.
Would it be possible to put the word out to the artisans in the region? If they are interested in becoming a vendor in The Island Gallery, or a Featured Artist, they can contact me. I would love to see their work either in person or on the web. I welcome any questions you may have regarding the artists already committed to the Gallery or any other specifics.
The Island Gallery on Boblo Island is just a short four minute Ferry ride from Amherstburg. Close enough to be convenient, far enough to be unique.

Arts Notes: March 29, 2011
Think&Drink: Share. Socialize.
On March 30th, 2011 at 7pm at Phog Lounge we’re launching a brand new initiative aimed at getting artists together and funding new projects!
Think&Drink is a new monthly discussion night hosted by our board member, the infamous Zeke Moores, which will connect local emerging and established artists.
That’s not all though…
Every few months, we’ll also host an event called CAAASH (Community Art Awards Around Social Hour). You’ve heard of this before — think about FEAST, SOUP, and Phog Philanthropy — basically, micro-grants for artists.
The goal is simple: help artists connect with one another and fund their projects.
At CAAASH, artists will be invited to make a 5-minute grant pitch. At the end of the night, everyone will be invited to participate in a silent vote, and the winner(s) will walk away with the cash that night. And the $5 cover charge at every Think&Drink builds the grant money pot and 100% of it gets handed over to the winning artist(s).
If you’re reading this, you’re invited. Visual Artists, Musicians, Performing Artists, Designers, Filmmakers, we want to see you there!!!

University Players
University Players ends season with modern masterpiece
University Players brings its 52nd Season in 2010-11 to a close with Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia. The play runs March 31-April 3 and April 6-10, 2011 at Essex Hall Theatre.
Hailed as “a masterpiece!” by The Daily Telegraph, this witty comedy is both a breath of fresh air and a feast of ideas. In 1809, a 13-year old mathematical genius comes up with a revolutionary theory in her family’s English manor house. 180 years later and in the same house, a group of modern scholars piece together her life story and find, for themselves, the truth of her astounding theory – a theory that tugs at the heart as well as the mind.
“Tom Stoppard’s brilliance with language and pace, and the tenderness with which he treats his characters, is all here,” says the play’s director, faculty member Brian Taylor. “He has written a comedy in which some very large ideas are examined: the nature of human mortality, and more particularly, what is important about being alive.”
Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, April 3, a “Talk Back” discussion with the director and actors will follow the performance. Tickets are $18-$20. Essex Hall Theatre is located on the University of Windsor campus.
For information or tickets, call 519-253-3000, ext. 2808 or visit www.UniversityPlayers.com.

Theatre Alive

Theatre Alive is ready to embark on its 34th musical production, “HAIRSPRAY”, set to hit the stage on April 1, 2, & 3 at the Chrysler Theatre – St. Clair Centre for the Arts. This cult classic is directed by Brian Raisbeck, showcasing Music Express with Musical Director, Nino Palazzolo, and with choreography by Corey Mariuz.
HAIRSPRAY delighted audiences by sweeping them away to 1960′s Baltimore, where the 50′s are out — and change is in the air. Loveable plus-size heroine, Tracy Turnblad, has a passion for dancing, and wins a spot on the local TV dance program, “The Corny Collins Show.” Overnight she finds herself transformed from outsider to teen celebrity. Can a larger-than-life adolescent manage to vanquish the program’s reigning princess, integrate the television show, and find true love (singing and dancing all the while, of course!) without mussing her hair?
Audiences of all ages will be dazzled by this spectacular musical! Ticket prices are $28 to $30. To order tickets, call the Chrysler Theatre Box Office at (519) 252-6579
or on-line at http://www.chryslertheatre.com/events.htm OR Call Theatre Alive Box Office at (519) 737-9919. (No service fees when ordering through Theatre Alive’s Box Office until Feb. 28/10.)

Loaded with excellent dialogue, compelling characters and a director with a knack of making the ordinary extraordinary, Another Year is a triumph.
Rabbit Hole - 9:15 pm
USA; 2010; Director: John Cameron Mitchell; 91 minutes; English
Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart play Becca and Howie Corbett, a couple trying to mourn, but unsure how to do it. They have retreated into politeness and private rituals, appearing more and more isolated in their upper middle-class home, which looks especially barren now that their young son is gone after a hit-and-run tragedy. Unable to mourn but unready to re-enter daily life, Becca rebuffs her family, snapping at her more reckless sister and humiliating her mother (Dianne Wiest) every chance she gets. As Howie makes genuine efforts to connect, Becca begins to pursue a course even she doesn’t understand.

Both plays are directed by Korda’s Resident Director Jeff Marontate, who has been planning for this science fiction take on the bard’s work for more than a year. He has edited (and in the case of Comedy, slightly adapted) the scripts for this performance. The plays are produced by Tracey Atin, with costumes by J.P. Watters and Kelly Ridley, and alien make-up design by Jordan Cabral. Set design is by Marontate and Daniel Nolin. Alexandra Spirou has choreographed a dance, and Ian Bruno has blocked the combat scenes.

Gibson Gallery
The Shores of Erie Wine Festival Planning Committee has approached the Gibson Gallery requesting that the Gallery host an “Arts Tent” at the 7th Annual Shores of Erie Wine Festival. The festival attracts some 20,000 visitors to Amherstburg’s Fort Malden National Historic Site on the Detroit River and last year, 3-day passes and Saturday tickets sold out well in advance of the festival dates.
At this point the Gibson Gallery is investigating the feasibility of hosting a Galleries Tent at the SOE Wine Festival. As a volunteer with the Gibson Gallery, I have been asked to write to Windsor and Essex County galleries to determine if there is sufficient interest in renting space in our tent at the upcoming wine festival. We see this as an excellent opportunity for area galleries to showcase art, sell merchandise, and promote services. As such, I am writing today to solicit your feedback. We have limited information at this time as we are in the early planning stages, but if there enough interest is generated, we will follow up with additional information and a rental application.
Dates: September 10th and 11th
Exhibit Time: 12:00 to 7:00 pm.
Space: 10 X 10 (approx)
Rental Fee: $300
Based on the information provided, do you think your gallery/studio may be interested in renting space in the Gibson Gallery hosted “Galleries Tent” at the Shores of Erie Wine Festival on September 10th and 11th?

The Water Narratives
“The Water Narratives” is an exhibition of current work by 3 local artists, A. G. Smith, Barbara Murawski and Elaine Carr. Work will be shown at the Arts Council Windsor and Region’s “Artspeak Gallery” located at 1942 Wyandotte Street East, in Windsor, Ontario.
Water is an intrinsic part of life, especially for those of us who live on the shores of the Great Lakes Waterway.

Artspeak Gallery
1942 Wyandotte Street East Windsor, On
Exhibition dates: March 15 – 26
1 – 5 p.m. (Artists will be present Tuesday – Saturday)
Margaret Dawson – Van Der Veen is an award winning international artist who has exhibited in juried, group and solo shows. She is known for her nautical and landscape paintings. Her work was featured on the cover ”GAM on Yachting” magazine as well as “Windsor Parks & Rec. Guide.” After an absence of 12 years spent full-time living on the road in a 5th wheel and then a motor home, she has returned to Windsor. This show will feature some of her work from her travels as well as Plein Air work from the Windsor and Essex County area.
Elizabeth Gaye MacDonald, B.F.A. is an award winning artist working in photography, painting, and printmaking. She received her B.F.A. in 2000 at the University of Windsor. Currently, she is teaching Life Drawing at Windsor Printmaker’s Forum. Recently, Elizabeth’s work has concentrated on Plein Air painting, and Life Drawing. She loves the peaceful experience of painting out of doors, and feels painting from nature rejuvenates the spirit, and soothes the soul. Along with other works, Elizabeth is debuting her recent drawings in her new book “”The Song” – Quotes from the “Song of Solomon” Illustrated by Elizabeth Gaye MacDonald,”" and will be taking orders for the first edition.
In 2009 Margaret and Elizabeth formed the “Windsor & Essex County Plein Air Society.” They arrange free outings to different locations every week in warmer weather. The group is based on Facebook and is open to anyone who would like to join.

“ARTSEEN 13 – SHELF LIFE”
The shelves have been flying off the shelves here at Artcite, as artists from the Windsor and Detroit areas have been picking up 23″ x 9″ pine shelves to turn into original works for the soon-to-open ARTSEEN 13 – SHELF LIFE show at Artcite.
Up to 100 artists will hang their shelf-creations on Artcite’s walls – working the idea and the materiality of “the shelf” in a show that will push the boundaries of the creative process: objets d’art, objets d’artiste, Duchampian “ready-mades” (that make ‘dada’ proud), SHELVED ideas! Think OUTSIDE the shelf! Think ON the shelf! Think ABOUT the shelf!
Visitors can buy one (or many) of the shelf-works! “Artseen 13 – SHELF LIFE” is an exhibition AND a gallery FUN(d)raiser(R)(TM), so many of the shelves are up for grabs!

Distinguished Speakers Series presents Jed Rasula, University of Georgia at Athens. “A Telephone from the Beyond: iPod Wagnerism”
For nearly fifty years, the phenomenon of “Wagnerism” convulsed western society in a steady crescendo of intoxicating slogans – “Leitmotiv,” “endless melody,” “music of the future,” “total art work” – like so many keys to unlock the mysteries of inwardness. We now inhabit a world in which music inhabits us, delivered intravenously through portable devices like the iPod. Is this realm of constant musical stimulus and solace a social contract or an irreversible plunge into universal solipsism? Looking back at Wagnerism will help us face the question.

Romantic Miniatures by Beethoven, Bartok, Nielsen, Wagner Violinist Konstantin Popovic plays Beethoven as WSO presents a selection of Maestro Russell’s favourite romantic compositions at Intimate Classics concerts in Windsor, Leamington and Tecumseh.
WSO Assistant Concertmaster Konstantin Popovic is the featured soloist in Beethoven’s Romance no.1 in G major and no. 2 in F major, as the Windsor Symphony Orchestra performs a range of works by Bartok, Revueltas, Nielsen and celebrated Canadian composer Marjan Mozetich.
The final piece in the programme, Wagner’s Siegfried Idyll, is quintessentially romantic. It was composed as a birthday present for his second wife Cosima, illegitimate daughter of Franz Liszt, former wife of conductor Hans von Bulow, and mother of Wagner’s first son, Siegfried. Many of the themes in the composition will be familiar to opera enthusiasts, as they are derived from the joyous music in the famous love scene in Wagner’s Siegfried, the third opera in his Ring Cycle.
The first two of four performances will take place at Assumption University Chapel on Friday, March 25, 2011, at 11: a.m. and 7:30 p.m. This is the fourth of five concerts in this season’s Morris & Beverly Baker Foundation Intimate Classics Series.
The performances are dedicated to the memory of Armando De Luca.
The WSO will perform the concert again on Saturday, March 26, in Leamington, at Leamington United Mennonite Church and on Sunday, March 7, in Tecumseh at St. Anne’s Church.
The Tecumseh concert is jointly sponsored by Windsor Chapel Funeral Home Limited and Heavenly Rest Family of Catholic Cemeteries.

Think&Drink: Share. Socialize.
KORDA Artistic Productions
In addition to directing, Jeff Marontate has been creating many of the creature props and masks which will be used in the plays. Alien dogs and their monstrous prey feature in a hunting scene in Titus, and later in the play the empress and her two sons don masks to disguise themselves as gods of Revenge, Murder and Rape. Marontate has also been working closely with his designers to make sure every detail is as he’s envisioned it.
On Sunday April 27 at 3:00, Jordan Cabral will be leading the cast in a make-up tutorial at the theatre, to teach the actors how to apply their detailed facial appliances to transform them into alien beings. All cast members in Titus Andronicus wear alien make-ups, ranging from pointed ears and slanted eyebrows to ridged bony foreheads and blue antennae. On performance days, the cast will have only 20 minutes, the length of the intermission, to apply the make-up. Many of the actors play aliens of different planets in The Comedy of Errors, adding to the pressure to make a fast change bewteen shows. Members of the press are welcome to attend this tutorial.
The same 18 actors play roles in both shows. The cast includes Tracey Atin as the Abbess and Tamora, Jeffery Bastien as The Science Officer and Saturninus, Jen Brodie as the Courtesan and a Goth soldier, Ian Bruno as BOTH the Tiberius twins and Bassianus, Isaac Butler as Angelo and Alarbus, Jordan Cabral as Nell and the Nurse, Kristen Dias-Lamoure as Adriana and Sempronia, Andrew Filice as BOTH the Pavel twins and Demetrius, Matt Froese as the Second Merchant and the Peasant, Bart Hoxha as Balthazar and Lucius, Cameron Iler as Young Lucius, Greg Iler as the Duke and Marcus Andronicus, Fay Lynn as Luciana and Lavinia, Dan McDonald as an Officer and Aaron, Jeff Marontate as the Doctor and Aemilius, Jon Peladeau as the Executioner and Publius, Jonathan Tessier as the Jailer and Chiron, and Dean Valentino as the First Merchant and Titus Andronicus.

Workshop #1. Plexiglas drypoint etching workshop with Vanessa Cornell
Vanessa will demonstrate a drypoint printmaking technique using plexiglas. Drypoint etching involves scratching a design into the surface of your plate using needles, sandpaper or other materials to incise the surface. When the plate is inked, it collects in the grooves and burrs and when the print is transferred to paper the drypoint lines are left behind. All materials provided.
Date: Friday, April 8, 2011
Start & End Times: 10am-12 OR 6-9pm
Prices: $25(membership discounts available) All materials included
register ASAP by calling 354-8338 or visiting www.thecultralcentre.com
Workshop #2. Collagraph with Vanessa Cornell
The freedom of collagraph relief printmaking gives many creative possibilities. If you can ink it, you can print it! Found objects from nature, like dried fruit, leaves or even flattened street trash can be combined with painterly marks from glues and gesso to create a collage plate. These plates can be pressed without inking to make an embossing or inked and run through the press. There are two workshop times for this class, a morning class and an evening class. All materials included.
Date: Friday, May 6, 2011
Start & End Times: 10am-12 OR 6-9pm

Workshop #3. Relief Printing
Linocut is a printmaking technique in which a sheet of linoleum is used for the relief surface. A design is cut into the linoleum surface with a sharp knife, V-shaped chisel or gouge to create an image. The raised parts are then rolled up with ink and run through an etching press. The versatility of lino block allows the image created to be either very graphic or highly detailed depending on the desired effect. All materials included.
Date: Friday, June 3, 2011
Start & End Times: 10am-12 OR 6-9pm
Prices: $25(membership discounts available) All materials included

Think&Drink: Share. Socialize. Win Money for Your Art.

Mary Celestino: Middle Island, a Disquieted Spirt

These paintings, created by local painter Mary Celestino, seek to underscore the enormous philosophical divide between those who argue against the notion of reassembling injured ecosystems and those who say that in some cases, we have no choice.

Theatre Alive is ready to embark on its 34th musical production, “HAIRSPRAY”, set to hit the stage onMarch 25, 26, 27 and April 1, 2, & 3 at the Chrysler Theatre – St. Clair Centre for the Arts. This cult classic is directed by Brian Raisbeck, showcasing Music Express with Musical Director, Nino Palazzolo, and with choreography by Corey Mariuz.
