The Work Collective. May 14 – May 18 2012

As part of MayWorks Windsor 2012 youth from Catholic Central High School and Holy Names High School have created a piece entitled: “The Daily Grind” a commentary on the meaning of work. They have written stories about their workplaces, usually part time jobs after school and on weekends and have added a few stories by people with whom they come into contact on a daily basis. The work collective consists of the students their teachers Andrea Rice and Laura Vidler and is curated by Elaine Carr.

At ArtSpeak from May 14-18 the students will have on exhibit images and story about their daily grind and on May 14 th at 7 pm they will be in the gallery with a performance piece. The work is very engaging and the youth give us much to think about and many laughs as well.

The project is part of the third annual MayWorks Festival of Arts, Culture and Labour.

MayWorks will continue throughout the month of May in venues throughout the City.

The Daily grind is sponsored by OECTA and is a partnership with the Arts Council Windsor Region.

Drift Launched!

Finally launched and available in the iOS App Store!

Drift helps you get lost in familiar places by guiding you on a walk using randomly assembled instructions. Each instruction will ask you to move in a specific direction and, using the compass, look for something normally hidden or unnoticed in our everyday experiences.

As you find these hidden or unnoticed things, you will be asked to document them with the camera, creating a photographic record of you walk. Drift also keeps track of where and when you took the photos and makes your documentation optionally available for others to view through the Drift website (soon)!

Drift takes up where our algorithmic / psychogeographic walks left off to create an app that encourages you to explore your neighbourhood in an entirely new way. We’re really excited to organize a walk here in Windsor and would love to hear if you do the same in your city!

Drift was developed by Justin Langlois in collaboration with Broken City Lab.

This project was generously supported by the Ontario Arts Council Media Arts Grant for Emerging Artists.

If you download Drift, let us know what you think. We’re already working on some refinements and new features!

Windsor Endowment for the Arts

Sunday May 21, 2012

The Windsor Endowment for the Arts (WEA) today issues a challenge to residents, schools and businesses in Windsor and region inviting them to demonstrate their support of the arts by participating in WEA’s Toonies Talk WEA Walks/Walk for a Creative City 2012…. Walkers will gather at Assumption Park at 10:00am on May 21, and all are welcome and encouraged to bring friends and family.

“We know times are tough but toonies talk, and for the price of a morning coffee donors could make a real difference to our cultural community,” explained Carolyne Rourke, WEA President. “To facilitate the Toonies Talk campaign, WEA will be placing Toonie Bins in locations across the region and inviting local schools and businesses do the same.”

WEA Walkers will be accepting pledges in advance of the Walk, and will also carry a Toonie Bin during the Walk appealing to the community for on-the-spot donations. Donations collected will support WEA’s Endowment Fund.

“The value of the Creative Class in revitalizing cities is well documented,” Rourke added. “It is time we worked together to secure a spot for Windsor and region on the Creative City map.”

Individuals, businesses, schools and community centres interested in partnering in WEA’s Toonies Talk campaign should contact WEA at info@wea-arts.com. To find a Toonie Bin location nearest you; pledge your support of one of WEA’s walkers; or to walk with WEA in the Walk for a Creative City, visit the WEA website at www. wea-arts.com

A Gallery Without Walls – Street Art

Deadline for original artwork is May 25, 2012.

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” – Edgar Degas

A Gallery Without Walls in its 6th year, is an exciting initiative brought to you by the Tecumseh Improvement Area (BIA). Banners that are hand-painted by local artist of all ages hang on town street poles from June to December. This incredibly colourful and unique town streetscape celebrates the wealth of creative talent in our area. Each year a new theme is selected and drawing submissions are judged by a committee of various Town of Tecumseh members and the chosen entries reflect a diversity of work. The artists then reproduce their art work on a specially treated vinyl banner (28”x 44”) on both sides of the banner. Currently we have over 60 original hand-painted banners for display!!

The theme for this year’s spring banner contest is “Celebrate 200 Years of Peace” to help commemorate the Bi-Centennial of the War of 1812.

Click on the brochure for guidelines, dead line dates and entry form. Deadline for original artwork is May 25, 2012.

Bike Rack Sculptures – Look at it, lock it…its art that works! Another artistic addition to A Gallery Without Walls are the bike rack sculptures that add another unique and diverse way of bringing artwork to the street. The program encourages local artists to create bike racks that bring the spirit of the businesses and the character of the neighbourhood to its sidewalks, public/town buildings and in our beautiful parks and parkettes throughout the Town of Tecumseh. The bike rack sculptures serve two functions, one to encourage more bicycle riders within and around the area by providing racks that they can lock their bikes up to and second to create a greater appreciation for public art. You don’t have to be a cyclist to appreciate a functional and unique object that doesn’t look like a typical bike race!

Art in our townscape makes for a fun day of touring by car, bicycle and even on foot to enjoy the work of finest local artists!

Artcite Inc.

“OCCUPY THIS!” A group exhibition for MayWorks Windsor 2012,
exhibition runs until May 26, 2012

“OCCUPY WINDSOR DOCUMENTATION PROJECT” by
Alana Bartol (Windsor ON); Collette Broeders (LaSalle ON); and

“THE BREAK ROOM” by the GO HOME Collective: Teresa Carlesimo (Windsor, ON) and Michael DiRisio (Amherstburg ON)

Organized by the MayWorks Windsor 2012 Committee

Artcite collaborates with the MayWorks Windsor committee to develop a new and relevant activist themed exhibition for each MayWorks Windsor celebration, highlighting issues of labour and the Arts. Our 2012 exhibit features the Windsor ON collective GO HOME’s installation “The Break Room”; the “Occupy Windsor Documentation Project” and video histories of “Occupy Windsor” participants.

With the permission, support and participation of Occupy Windsor, Collette Broeders and Alana Bartol present “Occupy Windsor Documentation Project”, a multi-media installation that includes various artifacts from the Occupy Windsor camp, mixed-media drawings, video and sound. The exhibit examines the oral stories collected from the camp as well as the unique methods of communication used by Occupy Windsor and Occupy movements worldwide. Though this exploration, Bartol and Broeders evoke the power of nonverbal systems of communication that resonate within resistance groups as well as members of the wider community.

“As more people in this region lose jobs and politicians answer with austerity, the Occupy movement taught us that it is possible for people to come together, live and work for the mutual benefit of all in the spirit of cooperation. Occupy Windsor stands as an example of not only resistance but of workable alternatives.”
-Paul Chislett (Occupy Windsor)

Teresa Carlesimo and Michael DiRisio (GO HOME collective), presents their installation; “The Break Room” – a typical workspace break room, constructed within the gallery: a room that is completely furnished and appears to be a fully functional break room, but without a door or entry way. Without an entrance the room will be physically unreachable, but visible through plexiglass windows We have created a break room as a place that exists only in the context of wage labour, yet is not a place of labour. Instead, it is a place for the time spent between labouring. It’s a non-place. A place that is often cold and inhospitable. A place that rarely offers the respite that is promised by a “break”. As well, by transforming a section of the gallery space into a break room, we are effectively transforming the surrounding area into a workspace.

InspectX: Industrial Passages: A Worker Dwells Here

Coinciding with Mayworks Windsor 2012. Exhibitions runs until May 31, 2012

“Industrial Passages:  A Worker Dwells Here” follows the journey of worker through movement in industrial spaces. Coinciding with Mayworks Windsor 2012. May 10, 2012 – May 31, 2012

Merging industry with the arts and coinciding with Mayworks Windsor 2012, a two person exhibit of works by artists Collette Broeders and Julia Crampsie will be held at InspectX.

“Industrial Passages:  A Worker Dwells Here” follows the journey of the worker through movement in industrial spaces. During the past two years, artist Collette Broeders has been documenting the development in industrial spaces.  Both Broeders and Crampsie collected and traced patterns of movements in the manufacturing sector that include rust stains and marks of evidence of the worker left behind.  These remnants form a methodical collection of markings culminating from an ongoing journey offering an opportunity to contemplate these spaces.  The drawings, prints and digitally manipulated images reflect map-like metaphors of the journey of the worker. The transparent images are layered providing an indexical view of the passage of labour for countless workers.  The images revitalize forgotten spaces of empty factories and those left behind in the wake of economic downturn and serve as a reminder that the industrial community remains.  This idea of revitalization and regeneration facilitates an interaction between artists and workers to build a greater understanding of one another and their community.

InspectX: 5575 Roscon Industrial Drive – Oldcastle, Ontario – N0R 1L0. ph. (519) 737-2667 for other viewing appointments.

The Daily Grind

The Work Collective:
The Daily Grind: searching for daily meaning as well as daily bread
May 14-18
Opening Event: May 14 @ 7pm

Artcite Inc.

“OCCUPY THIS!” A group exhibition for MayWorks Windsor 2012,
April 20 – May 26, 2012

1ST AND 3RD WEDNESDAYS

Beginning Wednesday, May 2nd at 6:30pm, Arts Council – Windsor & Region (ACWR) launches their new series: 1st & 3rd Wednesdays, a bi-weekly arts networking event.  Our first Wednesday get-together is titled Community Seeks Artist for Meaningful Partnership. This evening event brings artists and community organizations together to
facilitate discussions and create connections.

The ACWR recognizes the value of these relationships in our community and hopes that 1st & 3rd Wednesdays will help facilitate various partnerships. Opportunities for art to be integrated into community life can be developed through programs such as the Artists in the Community / Workplace (AICW) grant that supports the development of collaborative, community arts projects. Cultural Animator Alana Bartol will be on hand at the event to answer any questions about the AICW grant.

Participation is open to artists and community members. You don’t need to have a partnership in mind or project being planned, just drop in to see what is happening – you may pick up some ideas or make a great connection.  Collaboration can be a blast!

The second Wednesday networking session, on May 16th will feature an open discussion about initiating and creating community-engaged art projects with local recipients of the AICW grant, Justin Langlois of Broken City Lab and Rolly Marentette of the Injured Workers Coalition.

To RSVP and more information, please contact: 519-252-ARTS (2787) or info@acwr.net

This Week at Artspeak Gallery

Out on a Limb. April 30 – May 4 2012

MARY ATKINSON: The present works are influenced by the collages and assemblages Mary Atkinson has been making for many years since earning a BFA at the University of Windsor. This recent return to painting is inspired by the patterns found in trees and the colours she loves. It is a recognition of and homage to the role of trees in our lives and in our environment.

MARGARET GUILLET: is a representational artist who completed her BFA at the University of Windsor. The works in this show are influenced by the centuries-old traditions in Western landscape painting. In her depiction of trees she utilizes light, colour and brushwork to make them interesting, to interpret them in a fanciful manner or to use them as metaphors. Her images are meant to be familiar and accessible and to celebrate the nature around us.

Exhibition runs: Monday April 30 – May 4 2012
Reception: May 4 7pm-10pm

“OCCUPY THIS!” A group exhibition for MayWorks Windsor 2012,
April 20 – May 26, 2012

“OCCUPY WINDSOR DOCUMENTATION PROJECT” by
Alana Bartol (Windsor ON); Collette Broeders (LaSalle ON); and

“THE BREAK ROOM” by the GO HOME Collective: Teresa Carlesimo (Windsor, ON) and Michael DiRisio (Amherstburg ON)

Organized by the MayWorks Windsor 2012 Committee

Reception: Friday May 4, 2012, 7:30 PM

SB Contemporary Art

SB Contemporary Art presents……

The River and the Land Sustain You?
A Project by Professor William Starling of DodoLab

May 5 - June 9, 2012

Opening Reception: Saturday May 5, 1-4pm
AGW Talk/Tour: Sunday May 6, begins at 1pm

DodoLab and SB Contemporary Art are pleased to announce the visit of the eminently knowledgeable Professor William Starling to the city ofWindsor. Prof. Starling has been discretely visiting Windsor over the past two years to study and converse with the vast flock of his species mates that now roost in the understory of the Ambassador Bridge. While his kind is in shocking decline in his home range of Northern Europe and theUnited Kingdom, starlings remain ubiquitous across North America where the vast undulating clouds of birds (called murmurations) can be a common occurrence, particularly in the Windsor area.

While studying the starling community around Windsor’s Ambassador Bridge, the situation on the adjacent Indian Road with its long line of boarded up and empty houses came to his attention. Starlings frequent this neighborhood, and so the professor has been developing a rich inter-species narrative of adaptation to changing environments and the phenomenon of “invasive species” and habitat loss (his areas of expertise).

Professor William Starling’s activities are in conjunction with Windsor’s Mayworks 2012. His stay here includes this exhibition of creative research material from a recent visit to the UK as well as an exhibition tour/talk of Land Marks: Contemporary Photographsfrom the Art Gallery of Windsor’s collection. The professor can also be found on Sunday morning 11am to 1pm, strolling the Riverside between the Ambassador bridge and the AGW.

DodoLab is an art and design based program lead by Lisa Hirmer and Andrew Hunter that researches, engages and responds to contemporary community challenges, with a particular focus on the natural world, social systems, the built environment and cities in transition. From gorgeous vocal harmonies to foot-stomping fun!

Puzzleroot is an eclectic, genre-bending and blending band from Vancouver Island. They have been labeled roots, altfolk, dark folk, altcountry, bluegrass, and punkgrass.

Drawing on primarily original material, this band encompasses adept vocal harmonies, with poetic and yet, often humourous and insightful lyrics. From gorgeous vocal harmonies to foot-stomping fun, this band includes slide banjo and country picking at its best.

Puzzleroot is releasing their 2nd CD in the spring of 2012. Their first CD was released in late 2009 and has not only received airplay on CBC, Village 900, CHLY, CJSF, CIUT, CiTR and CFUV, but hit the charts on CFUV, CJSF, CIUT and CHLY. It has also garnered positive reviews from the media, musicians, and fans.

“a gorgeous voice that seemed way too big for one person” ~ Barbara Bruederlin, No Depression Roots Songstress Allison Brown…
… likes her religion a little bit gritty, takes her country music with a side of syrup and keeps her folk as dusty as the ol’ cabin floor. With a hatful of broken hearts, bad weather, toils of the road and leaps of faith, Allison’s crafted originals matched with classic roots repertoire reflect the striking conviction she brings to her sweet and powerful singing. As a soloist, Allison’s lonesome warbles soar over subtle guitar framework, but can turn quickly to a feverish cyclone when joined by her spirited troupe of accompanists. Allison brings her truest self to her collection of songs and to the stage in a refreshing conversation with the audience.

Day of Solidarity with the Cuban Revolution

The Cuban Revolution: Continuity and Transformation
Sunday, May 6, 2012

3pm: Keynote presentation, Cuban Consul General
5pm: Traditional Cuban Dinner
6pm: Film Night: Habana Station

Sangria Latin Lounge
485 Pelissier St.

(Presentation and film are free to the public; dinner tickets must be purchased in advance: $15, children under 5 by donation and children 5-12; $10)

As part of MayWorks Windsor 2012, the Canadian-Cuban Friendship Association-Windsor is pleased to present this exciting program for this year’s Day in Solidarity with the Cuban Revolution under the theme: The Cuban Revolution: Continuity and Transformation.

In order to make the Day a success, we need your help. Please consider bringing friends, spouses, family members or co-workers either to the entire event or to the dinner and movie portion.

This theme was chosen because Cuba, like Canada and the rest of the world, is facing economic challenges as a result of the current crisis. In an effort to find solutions to these challenges, Cuba has undertaken reforms of its economy. At last year’s Day, Consul General for the Cuban Consulate in Toronto, Jorge Soberon pointed out that the economic reforms in Cuba are part of an internal process of renewal and development; not the result of external pressures. He explained that in order to face the current challenges, the country is expanding its economic base and productive capacity as an alternative to cutting social programs. In this year’s address, Mr. Soberon will update us on the progress and ongoing challenges to date.

The film Habana Station (2011) is a Cuban film that deals with the realities of the Cuban people today. It was premiered in July 2011 by the Cuban Institute of the Cinematographic Industry and Arts. Habana Station is the story is of two young boys who become friends despite their social and economic differences. Although both are classmates, they come from different parts of Havana; neither one understanding the reality of the other; however, when they get lost during the May Day demonstrations, their relationship changes.

For dinner tickets or more information, please contact: ccfawindsor@gmail.com or 519-991-4167.Windsor

Out On a Limb “Tree as Muse”

EXHIBITION EXTENDED TO MAY 11TH

Recent paintings by Mary Atkinson and Margaret Guillet
April 30 – May 11, 2012

1st/3rd WEDNESDAYS

Beginning Wednesday, May 2nd at 6:30pm, Arts Council – Windsor & Region (ACWR) launches their new series: 1st & 3rd Wednesdays, a bi-weekly arts networking event.  Our first Wednesday get-together is titled Community Seeks Artist for Meaningful Partnership. This evening event brings artists and community organizations together to
facilitate discussions and create connections.

The ACWR recognizes the value of these relationships in our community and hopes that 1st & 3rd Wednesdays will help facilitate various partnerships.

SB Contemporary Art presents……

Actualized Space(s): site projection by Nicolas de Cosson

Thursday April 26 at dusk – 10pm

Actualized Space(s), de Cosson states, “..deals with the idea of the gallery space itself as one in constant transition, or transformation; one that rotates throughout the year. The projection also deals with the membrane as the source that holds the projection along with interactive elements; it is a virtual space actualized in a physical space. It is real, yet it is virtual – it is virtual, yet it is real.”

At the core, de Cosson is experimenting with new systems of coded experiences, ones that explore the idea of self, surface, the interface and how we can become more human through new forms of interactions. He holds a BFA from the University of Lethbridge, AB and he is presently enrolled in the Masters of Fine Arts program at the University of Windsor, ON.

This site projection will be viewed from outside of the gallery and the gallery will not be open at this time. The projection will begin at dusk and run on a loop until 10pm. The artist, Nicolas de Cosson will be on site to answer questions and discuss his work. This will be presented for one night only, you don’t want to miss it!

His stay here includes this exhibition of creative research material from a recent visit to the UK as well as an exhibition tour/talk of Land Marks: Contemporary Photographs from the Art Gallery of Windsor’s collection.

Professor William Starling joined them this past fall in Prince Edward Island and has most recently traveled to New York City and the United Kingdom. dodolab.ca

“There’s a new inmate at the assylum. He knows “The Ropes” really well. Mainly because he was a therapist before he was admitted!” Doctor Matthew Vaughn, one of the most famous psychiatrists in the industry, has committed proffessional suicide. After the treatment of one of his patients goes horrifically wrong, he decides to lock himself away in a secluded mental institution to heal himself of his guilt. Or so it would seem. You never know with Doctor Vaughn, he always seems up to something… Mind you, the people visitting him seem to have deeper motives, too. Outwardly, they seem to be more in need of psychological help than Vaughn does as they deal with hero worship issues, drug addiction and obcessive compulsiveness. But beneath all these syndromes, something sinister is lurking…. Can Doctor Vaughn outwit his visittors and make it safely back to sanity? Who will ultimately win in this game of psychiatric hide-and-seek? Who knows? But, whatever happens, be prepared for an adventure full of laughter, soul-searching and poor bladder control!
