ACWR Presents: March Break Monoprinting Workshop for Children
ACWR is proud to offer a monoprinting workshop at the Artspeak Gallery on Monday, March 12th, from 10.00 am till 1.00 pm. This three-hour workshop will teach children how to use a variety of tools and found material, e.g. leaves, lace, ribbons, and different textural papers. Students will learn how to create a composition and explore a variety of techniques and mediums that allow for creative expression in a fun and supportive atmosphere.
Monoprinting is a printing technique whereby a design is drawn onto a flat non-porous surface, also referred to as a printing plate. Paper is laid on top and after pressing, the image from the plate is transferred onto the paper. Monoprinting, as the name suggests, is when you create a unique print (rather than having a plate or a screen with an image that can be reproduced again and again). There are a number of different ways to make a monoprint, but in this workshop, students will learn three different methods, while focusing on basic drawing and painting techniques.
Cost (includes all materials): $5 per child for members, $10 for non-members. Suitable for children aged 6-12.
Space is limited so we advise you to pre-register by calling our office at 519-252 6855 or emailing us at info@acwr.net.
This workshop is offered by the Arts Council – Windsor & Region in memory of Susan Dingler (1941-2008)

FRIDAY NIGHT: February 24, 2012, 7:30 PM
Windsor’s Artist-Run Centre for the Contemporary Arts Presents:
“NEW WORKS ”
by Emily Hermant (Chicago IL. USA/ Montréal PQ)
Opening reception: Friday February 24, 2012, 7:30 PM
Exhibition runs February 24 – April 7, 2012
Artcite Gallery hours: Wed-Sat, Noon – 5:00 or by appointment.
Gallery admission and Reception always Free.
The public is encouraged to attend.
PRESS ACCESS: Ms. Hermant will be installing her work in the gallery this Wednesday (feb22) and Thursday (feb23) in the afternoon.
Please call for an interview.
“The new sculptural works in the installation are made of interconnected, hand-bent, hardwood planks whose curves and twists create a swirling, energetic, spatial drawing. By rendering solid hardwood pliable and then bending it in unusual ways, I treat the wood as three-dimensional thread. The unexpected tension of the shaped wood and the configurations and treatment of these forms present the viewer with contradictions: on the one hand, between material and form, and on the other hand, between the made and the process of making.” – Emily Hermant
Ms. Hermant’s work is presented in conjunction with the 2012 International Woman’s Day celebrations, held annually on March 8.
Emily Hermant received her BFA With Distinction in Studio Arts and Religion from Concordia University, Montréal, Québec, Canada in 2004, and completed her MFA as a Trustee Scholar from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2010, where her work was supported by a research grant from the Fonds québécois de recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC). She has exhibited widely in museums, galleries, and festivals in Canada, the United States, South America, and Europe, including the FAB Gallery at Virginia Commonwealth University (2011), Articule Artist-run Center for Contemporary Art in Montréal, QC (2010), Hyde Park Art Center (2010), Merchandise Mart (2010), and DOVA Gallery at the University of Chicago (2010) in Chicago, IL, The Triennale di Milano Museum in Milan, Italy (2009), the Biennale Internationale du Lin in Québec (2009), and at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York (2007-8). Her work has been reviewed in Espace Sculpture, Time Out Chicago, the Chicago Tribune, the Village Voice, American Craft Magazine, and Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art, among others.
Hermant has been awarded residencies at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, VT (2010) and at Studio XX Media Arts Center in Montréal, QC (2004-5), and has been the recipient of grants from the Conseil des Arts et Lettres du Québec (2007, 2009). Hermant has upcoming solo exhibitions at The Arlington Arts Center in Arlington, VA, The Delaware Center for Contemporary Art in Wilmington, DE, and at the Durand Art Institute at Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, IL (all 2012). Hermant is currently based in Richmond, VA where she is Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Craft and Material Studies at Virginia Commonwealth University (2011-12).

Are you in the room?
January 14 to March 3
Dean Carson
Matthew Hawtin
Jim Mroczkowski
In this group exhibition, Are you in the room?, the work of three artists Dean Carson, Matthew Hawtin, and Jim Mroczkowski come together. I was initially intrigued by the differences in each of these artists practices and studio processes, but at the same time I could not help but draw parallels between them. The relationships to space, to perception, and our understanding of meaning are in some cases physical and in others conceptual, psychological within the work. In all cases the viewer as well as the artist pose questions as the work pushes and pulls against perceived boundaries. This exhibition opens on Saturday January 14 and runs until March 3, 2011. The opening reception will take place on Thursday January 19 at 7pm, the artists will be in attendance.

The Optimism of Colour: William Perehudoff, a retrospective
January 14 – April 1, 2012
The Optimism of Colour is the first major retrospective of the career of internationally renowned Canadian abstract painter William Perehudoff. Drawn from public and private Canadian collections, the exhibition features more than 60 works, created between 1945 and 2002. The exhibition traces the evolution of Perehudoff’s approach from early figurative works and murals to the radiant abstractions of his mature vision, their interplays of colour suggestive of musical chords.
This exhibition is curated by Karen Wilkin of New York City and is organized and circulated by the Mendel Art Gallery. The Mendel Art Gallery has developed a number of interactive features including a contextual video; and a dedicated website:www.mendel.ca/Perehudoff
Luanne Martineau:
January 21- March 25
Montreal artist, Luanne Martineau produces needle-punched felt by piercing dyed raw sheep’s wool fibres over and over again with a long needle. Strands of various colours are entwined and compressed together to create a decidedly painterly effect, while the building up of many layers hardens the felt, resulting in dense, thickly sculptural masses. From Abstract Expressionist painting to the Duchampian ready-made, Martineau juxtaposes specific moments in the historical narratives of art and craft.
This exhibition is curated by Lesley Johnstone, Conservatrice/Curator, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal and is organized by Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal in collaboration with the Art Gallery of Windsor
John Kissick: A Nervous Decade
January 21 – March 25, 2012
John Kissick’s work has enjoyed acclaim over the past decade for its viable, if highly critical, dialogue with the historical conventions of abstract painting. Kissick weaves the familiar – such as the supergraphics on 1960s civic architecture and contemporary popular music – into an expansive conversation about quotation and the institutionalization of artistic processes. A Nervous Decade brings together paintings from public and private collections throughout Canada. This exhibition traces Kissick’s early exploration and re-assembly of an abstract expressionist lexicon, through to a current immersion in hybrid painting informed by popular culture.
This exhibition is curated by Crystal Mowry and organized and circulated by the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery in partnership with the Kelowna Art Gallery.
Catalogues for all three shows are available in ShopAGW.

Lounge: DESCENT FROM THE CROSS:
A Masterwork by Pablo Davis
Pablo Davis is the last surviving artist who worked with Diego Rivera on the Detroit Industry frescoes at the Detroit Institute of Arts. He went on to become a renowned artist in his own right. His work ranges from representational post-impressionism to highly abstract expressionism.
Now ninety-five years old, Davis will be exhibiting his most recent work, Descent from the Cross, in the second-floor lounge of the Scarab Club. The 9′ x 6′ charcoal drawing is a moving tribute to his long commitment to civil and human rights.
In addition to Descent from the Cross, Davis will be exhibiting and selling prints of his paintings, as part of the exhibition.
The opening reception for Davis’s exhibition, on Friday, February 17th, will feature Music by Carl Zoolkowski and Phyllis Bengry and remarks by Retired Circuit Court Judge, Claudia Morcom. The closing reception, on Friday, March 23rd will feture music by Buddy Smith and Group Therapy and remarks by Detroit City Councilman, Ken Cockrel. Both events are free and open to the public.

Possibilities, Disabilities & the Arts:
Painting, drawing, writing, music, drama and other forms of arts are expressed beautifully by and through individuals with disabilities in Keri Bower’s new film, ARTS. – Sharing the power of the arts used to improve social, emotional, cognitive, expressive, and life skills in individuals with challenges is at the heart of this glimpse into pure talent demonstrated by people with disabilities. ARTS explores the possibilities of creating commercial and personal successes for young artists with various disabilities when encouraged and paired with professional artists working in a field closely related to the artists’ area of talent.
From fine art, including painting, drawing and photography, to writing, music, drama and other forms of art, the film explores how the arts can create invaluable opportunities for development and growth for persons with disabilities. From social and life skill development, to self-esteem and self-awareness, the film concludes that for those with artistic gifts, career goals can be achieved.

Assumption University

The Law Foundation of Ontario has awarded a grant to Assumption University in sponsorship of an evening presentation on The Underground Railroad by Leslie McCurdy on February 16, 2012.
Public and Free Presentation
“The Spirit of Harriet Tubman” by Leslie McCurdy, Actor/Playwright, Dancer/Choreographer, Singer
There are many plays about Harriet Tubman, but none share her entire life story like a visit with The Spirit of Harriet Tubman. Leslie McCurdy invokes the ‘spirit’ of Harriet Tubman as she portrays the life of the famous Underground Railroad conductor, recreating stories familiar and some rarely told, using words said to have been Harriet Tubman’s own.
Through it all we learn of the faith and conviction that drove Harriet Tubman to follow her dreams; the spirit of the past connecting with the present, inspiring her charges to have the courage to do the same in envisioning their future.
The event will take place at Assumption University Chapel, 2nd floor, 400 Huron Church Road,
Windsor at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 16, 2012.

“CHICAGO” has everything that makes Broadway great: a universal tale of fame, fortune and all that jazz; one show-stopping-song after another; and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen. In roaring twenties Chicago, heroine Roxie Hart murders a faithless lover and convinces her hapless husband Amos to take the rap…until he finds out he’s been duped and turns on Roxie. Convicted and sent to death row, Roxie and another “Merry Murderess” Velma Kelly, vie for the spotlight and the headlines, ultimately joining forces in search of the “American Dream”: fame, fortune and acquittal.

The Mendel Art Gallery has developed a number of interactive features including a contextual video; and a dedicated website: www.mendel.ca/Perehudoff

University Players presents Jane Austen classic
University Players continues its 53rd Season in 2011-12 with Jane Austen’s classic comedy Emma. The play runs February 2-5 and 8-12, 2012 at Essex Hall Theatre.
Jane Austen’s characters come to life in this new adaptation of the classic Emma, a romantic comedy about a precocious girl who find matchmaking “the most wonderful game in the world.” She plants ideas in people’s heads which grow feelings in their hearts, and through this meddling she finds her own heart’s desire – but only when she is about to lose him.
The production is directed by Jim Warren, a School of Dramatic Art alumnus and award-winning director. The version of Emma being performed was adapted by Michael Bloom, Artistic Director of the Cleveland Playhouse, and was first produced by that company in the Spring of 2010.

Are you in the room?
January 14 to March 3
Opening Reception: Thursday January 19, 7pm

The Mendel Art Gallery has developed a number of interactive features including a contextual video; and a dedicated website: www.mendel.ca/Perehudoff

Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, January 5, a “Talk Back” discussion with the director and actors will follow the performance. Tickets are $18-$20. Essex Hall Theatre is located on the University of Windsor campus.

The three-course lunch will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, February 5, at the Freed-Orman Centre, University of Windsor.

Windsor Light Music Theatre- Call for Chihuahuas
The Windsor Light Music Theatre is sending out an urgent casting call for friendly, well-behaved chihuahuas to audition for the top dog role of “Bruiser” in their upcoming production of Legally Blonde, opening this May at the Chrysler Theatre.
The auditions are scheduled for 1pm on Saturday, February 4 that the Windsor Light Rehearsal Studio, located at 2491 Jos St. Louis in Windsor. Interested dog owners or handlers are asked to call ahead to the WLMT – 519-974-6593, in order to register their dog for the audition.
This musical production of Legally Blonde is based on the popular 2001 movie starring Reese Witherspoon as Elle. Bruiser is Elle’s pet Chihuahua, and plays a reasonably large role in the show, appearing in many scenes with Elle’s character. Danielle Wade of Windsor will play the role as Elle, and will attend the dog auditions in order for the show’s director to determine how comfortably each canine candidate interacts with her.
Director David Burrows states; “In Legally Blonde, Elle Woods makes the comment that Bruiser isn’t just a pet, he’s family, and refers to him as Bruiser Woods. With that in mind, we knew we couldn’t just choose any dog. Bruiser is as much a part of the cast as any of our other actors, so it was important for us to hold auditions to find just the right chihuahua to fill those shoes”
Burrows adds; “Audiences familiar with the movie will recognize Bruiser as a small chihuahua with an excellent sense of fashion. He is well-mannered, well-behaved and responds on cue. In particular, he needs to bark on visual command, and be comfortable with being carried in a small case”.
The show will be the very first production of Legally Blonde the Musical to appear in the
Windsor/Detroit area. As one of the more popular broadway shows, it has been selling out in theatres all over the world since it originally opened in 2007. The Windsor show premiers at the Chrysler Theatre May 4, 5, 6 and May 11,12, 13. Tickets are now available at the WLMT box office, or through the Chrysler Theatre’s box office.

Are you in the room?
January 14 to March 3
Opening Reception: Thursday January 19, 7pm

The Mendel Art Gallery has developed a number of interactive features including a contextual video; and a dedicated website: www.mendel.ca/Perehudoff

This Week at Artspeak Gallery
Christine Keech
Jan 21-28
Opening Reception: Jan. 21 at 7pm at Artspeak Gallery
I create mixed media abstract paintings that incorporate my love of texture and colour with religious symbolism. My Christian faith has become the foundation for most of my work, especially my more recent paintings.
The ideas for the paintings come during quiet, meditative times, usually while I’m listening to a sermon, or sitting in a Bible class. The Bible is rich in symbolism and history and I wanted to explore and express the stories in a different way. I use an abstract, expressive approach that is interesting to look at as well as making people think about the subject matter.
Once an idea is in my head, I make a rough sketch and then begin layering acrylic paint washes and texture mediums. Sometimes there are many layers in a painting, rich with vibrant colours while other paintings are more subdued in nature. After the layering process is complete, I walk away. Sometimes a painting is left for a few hours, sometimes it’s weeks. With fresh eyes, I begin to bring out the details that have naturally formed from the layering of the different mediums and add in whatever objects or symbols that are needed. Many times hidden images reveal themselves and have been quite startling because rarely are they intentional.
The idea for this series entitled “The Trees Tell the Story” came to me while I was thinking about all the different trees that are found in the Old and New Testaments. The story begins with the two trees found in Genesis and are followed by other significant trees that mark important events in Christian history. It ends with the symbolic tree of twelve fruits from the Book of Revelation, thus bringing the story full circle.

“Rhetoric’s Presence”
Rhetoric holds a contested place in current argumentation theory. Excluded from some accounts, central to others, it retains vestiges of a history that marks its capacity to exploit more than it edifies. Regardless of how much attention it receives, rhetoric operates as a positive force throughout society, transforming experience in all walks of life. The tools rhetoric brings to the practice and understanding of argumentation are powerful and necessary. In this talk I explore some of the tools and ideas that have informed my work in rhetorical argumentation, with particular attention to the concept of presence and its role in the force of the better arguments.

Windsor International Film Festival
ADVANCED SCREENING
The National Film Board of Canada with the cooperation of the Windsor International Film Festival presents a special advance screening of
Pink Ribbons, Inc.
January 26th at 7:00 p.m – CAPITOL THEATRE
Tickets $5 at the door ( 5:30 p.m. ) or online at www.windsorfilmfestival.com.
Inspired by the book Pink Ribbons, Inc.: Breast Cancer and the Politics of Philanthropy by Samantha King, Pink Ribbons, Inc. shows how some companies use breast cancer cause-marketing to boost sales, while often contributing only a tiny fraction of proceeds to the cause. It also explores how companies that pollute or sell products containing dangerous chemicals are in on the action, too, using “pink washing” to polish their images, and even shaping the direction of cancer research. The end result is that the environmental causes of breast cancer have been largely ignored, with only a minuscule fraction of the funds going to prevention research.
Windsor Symphony Orchestra
The SymphRonica Project
Ron Davis to Record and Perform with the WSO
Jazz pianist Ron Davis and the WSO embark on a collaboration that will feature two performances, January 28 and 29, and culminate in a CD recording. The project, titled SymphRonica, is jazz piano and symphony orchestra fused together to create what Davis calls, “a stunning new kind of music.”
SymphRonica merges the creative talents of Ron Davis and his internationally acclaimed jazz trio with WSO Music Director John Morris Russell and the Juno award-nominated Windsor Symphony Orchestra. The idea for this project began when Ron Davis played with the WSO in 2009. Davis and Maestro Russell have worked for three years to bring this project into fruition.
Maestro Russell will conduct two concerts with Ron Davis and his trio on Saturday, January 28 and Sunday, January 29 at the Chrysler Theatre. Following the Sunday performance, the orchestra with Davis will play the same program for a third time in a closed theatre to record a CD. The release date for the CD will be announced soon.
John Morris Russell says that Davis’ 2009 performance with the WSO, “was a real smash. He is a wonderful pianist, delightful, funny and an entertaining host.” Russell went on to note that Davis, “kept the audience in rapt attention throughout. Ron had the right blend of standards and originals (which are all excellent) and judiciously mixed it up between swing, samba, stride, be-bop and gospel…definitely one of the most popular Pops acts we have had since I have been here!”

Theater Alive
Chicago will be performed at the Chrysler Theatre – St. Clair Centre for the Arts on March 23, 24, 25, 30, 31 and April 1st. Theatre Alive’s 36th musical production will be directed by Brian Raisbeck with musical direction by Nino Palazzolo and featuring Music Express.

The Mendel Art Gallery has developed a number of interactive features including a contextual video; and a dedicated website: www.mendel.ca/Perehudoff

Coming up At Artspeak Gallery

“Anonymous History and Acoustic Space: Giedion and the Shape of Canadian Media Studies ”
This paper belongs to a project to excavate the vital collaborations that developed during the landmark interdisciplinary Culture and Communications Seminar held at the University of Toronto (1953-55) Funded by a Ford grant, the weekly seminar was organized by the little-known English professor Marshall McLuhan, anthropologist Edmund Carpenter, and urban planner Jacqueline Tyrwhitt. They aimed to develop interdisciplinary methodologies using a ‘field’ approach to discern the new grammars and environments created by electronic communications technologies. For McLuhan, the central inspiration for this “experiment in communication” was the Swiss art historian and architectural critic Sigried Giedion.
A prominent mid-century humanist, Giedion was committed to crossing the boundaries between science, technology and art as a means to engage with history as a living process of “manifold relations” (1948: 3). His classic Mechanization Takes Command (1948) centered on a methodological approach to the ‘anonymous history’ of everyday objects and cultural phenomena that reveal the essential spirit of their period. McLuhan and his colleagues would adopt this approach to address the sociocultural implications of electronic media. In this talk I will examine how a particular methodology grew out of the seminar, using the environment and architecture as the framework for analyzing the effects of media.

The Mendel Art Gallery has developed a number of interactive features including a contextual video; and a dedicated website: www.mendel.ca/Perehudoff

The Thames Art Gallery
The Thames Art Gallery welcomes back Derrick Piens and Scott Everingham. Two Chatham artists in the joint exhibition Truth and Fantasy!
Derrick Piens and Scott Everingham are professional young artists and former natives of Chatham. They will be exhibiting together in an exhibition entitled Truth and Fantasy. The exhibition opens at the Thames Art Gallery on January 13, 2012, and an artist reception will be held on January 21, 2012 @ 8pm – the artists will be present and live music and snacks will be provided.
Piens’ works are three dimensional constructed systems that, although abstract in appearance, reference the real world. It is through cutting, gluing, plastering and sanding that Piens’ sculptures become unified into a singular entity. He is influenced by the phenomena of colour inherent to all objects, particularly, the vivid colours found in nature and focuses on exploring the physical relationship that exists between sculpture, the viewer, and the space they simultaneously inhabit
The formal elements of Everingham’s paintings are inherent: colour, composition, and balance; it is the impulsive mark-making that builds and defines a particular scenario and location into a living, breathing moment. Influenced by fiction, film, and spontaneity, his work extends to both the abstract and the representational, where the animate language of paint lends life to what may be experienced as very real and new places.
Piens received his MFA from Southern Methodist University (Dallas, TX), and BFA from NSCAD University (Halifax, NS). His sculptures are included in permanent collections at The Dallas Contemporary (Dallas, TX), and Meadows School of the Arts (Dallas, TX). Derrick’s work has additionally been acquired by several private collections in England, New York, Montreal, and Toronto. He has received support from the Ontario Arts Council. In 2009 Derrick was a resident artist at the Toronto School of Art. He lives and works in Toronto.
Everingham holds an MFA from the University of (Kitchener, Waterloo) and a BFA from NSCAD University in (Halifax, NS), and was a semi-finalist in the 11th and 12th RBC Painting Competitions. He recently won a Canada Council for the Arts Project Grant, and had his work Dear Life purchased by the Canada Council Art Bank. Scott lives and works in Toronto.
This exhibition opens January 13, 2012 and will run until February 12, 2012. The Thames Art Gallery is open 7-days a week from 1-5pm.

Artcite
“Southwestern Gothic” by Windsor’s Victor Romao
Opening reception Friday January 13, 2012, 7:30 PM with the artist in attendance
Exhibit runs January 13 – February 18, 2012
Gallery hours: Wed – Sat, 12 – 5 pm or by appointment
Victor Romao is a multi-disciplinary Canadian artist working and living in Windsor, Ontario. He is interested in a variety of practices which focus on drawing, sculpture, performance and print media.
“Through his monochromatic drawings, spare woodcut prints and figurative sculptures, Windsor, Ontario-based artist Victor Romao investigates issues of identity in distinctive ways. His practice includes bizarre likenesses of human and animal hybrids, chronicles of the deeds of anonymous, shadowy malefactors, and images of bucolic settings permeated with disturbing feelings of the surreal, uncanny, and ferocious. The artistís influences are varied, ranging from the clean inventiveness of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints, elements of baroque European sculptural and religious conventions, and Romao’s impressions of youth in rural Southwestern Ontario.
. . . Numerous images point to behaviour considered “masculine” run wild. They also explore senses of belonging to a group, and the experience of those considered outsiders, which include conflicting senses of identity faced by new Canadians, and the profiles imposed on them from without.”
-C. Getty, Museum London, London ON
His years spent living in rural Southwestern Ontario, have acted as the catalyst for his present interest in exploring the topics of fear, alterity, and male violence. For his Artcite solo debut, Romao will be showing works from his new Southwestern Gothic series.
He holds a BFA and MFA from the University of Windsor. He has participated in solo
and group exhibitions across Canada, the U.S. and New Zealand.
Romao will be installing his work at Artcite, during the afternoons of
Wednesday January 11 and Thursday January 12, and will be available for interviews.

Windsor Symphony Orchestra
Andreas Delfs to Conduct WSO
Maestro Russell yields podium to distinguished guest for January concert
Renowned conductor Andreas Delfs will lead the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in the January 14, 2012 concert program Stravinksy + Strauss. Delfs is the conductor laureate of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and has served as music director of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the General Music Director of Hannover, Germany where he conducted the symphony orchestra and the opera company.
This concert will also feature the WSO’s principal oboist Graham Mackenzie performing Richard Strauss’ Oboe Concerto. The concerto was written following WWII after an US soldier stationed near his house asked the composer if he ever considered writing a concerto for oboe. Strauss initially said no, but that soldier, John de Lancie, who went on to be Principal Oboist for the Philadelphia Orchestra (his son went on to play Q on Star Trek), planted a seed that would result in the concerto being performed this weekend.
Don’t miss the pre-concert talk at 7:00 p.m.! The CBC’s Bob Steele will host a conversation between Andreas Delfs and Graham Mackenzie.

The WSO expressed interest in Maestro Delfs as a guest artist, but coordinating concert dates with his busy schedule proved difficult. A recent opening in Delf’s calendar coincided with the WSO’s January Masterworks concert. Music Director John Morris Russell was originally scheduled to conduct this performance. Recognizing the opportunity this represents for the orchestra and the Windsor audience, Maestro Russell graciously offered to withdraw.
Andreas Delfs is widely recognized for his electric podium presence and creative flair for programming. During his twelve seasons as Music Director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, he fashioned a model for the next-generation music director in North America. Under his dynamic leadership, the Milwaukee Symphony rose to national prominence through acclaimed recording projects, commissions of new works, world premieres and innovative music education programs.

Andreas Delfs
Garnering accolades for his electrifying podium presence all over the world, Andreas Delfs served for twelve years until last season as Music Director of Milwaukee Symphony, where he fashioned a model for the next-generation music directors in America. Since 2007, Andreas Delfs has been Principal Conductor of Honolulu Symphony.
Delfs has held chief artistic positions with distinguished institutions such as St Paul Chamber Orchestra, Hannover Symphony and Opera, Bern Opera, and at an early age, the celebrated Orchestre Suisse des Jeunes. As a guest conductor, he has led the Royal Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Dresden Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Sydney Symphony, NHK Symphony, Taipei Philharmonic and more. He has collaborated with many of the world’s most renowned artists, including Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Yo-Yo Ma, Midori, Perlman, Pollini, Rostropovich and Renée Fleming.
A highlight in Delfs’ career is his commitment to contemporary music. Delfs’ recordings include Missa Latina with Milwaukee Symphony, Beethoven Piano Concerti with London Symphony and John O’Conor, a collection of sacred songs with Renée Fleming, and Hänsel und Gretel with Milwaukee Symphony. In 2005, Andreas led Milwaukee to become the first American orchestra to distribute live recordings online through iTunes.
Delfs studied at the Hamburg Conservatory and became the youngest ever Music Director of the Hamburg University Orchestra at age 20, before enrolling into the Juilliard School.

Are you in the room?
January 14 to March 3
Opening Reception: Thursday January 19, 7pm

Recent Research on Burden of Proof
The notion of burden of proof is central to argumentation studies, and indeed one could argue that it is the most fundamental concept in this area (excepting the concept of argument itself). Burden of proof also has long been acknowledged as a fundamentally important concept in law, even though it is conceded in law that it is an ambiguous and slippery legal notion that has resisted precise definition. This talk surveys different kinds of burden of proof recognized in recent studies on artificial intelligence and law, and discusses whether these notions are transferable to everyday conversational argumentation.

Opening Reception: Thursday January 19, 7pm

Windsor Symphony Orchestra
Andreas Delfs to Conduct WSO
Maestro Russell yields podium to distinguished guest
for January concert
Renowned conductor Andreas Delfs will lead the Windsor Symphony Orchestra in the January 14, 2012 concert program Stravinksy + Strauss. Delfs is the conductor laureate of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and has served as music director of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the General Music Director of Hannover, Germany where he conducted the symphony orchestra and the opera company.

Since his student days at the Juilliard School, he has established a deep connection with living composers and counts among his inspirations musicians such as John Corigliano and Philip Glass. Delfs has also conducted many outstanding opera productions, including Koenig Hirsch with Württemberg State Theatre in Stuttgart, Carmen with New York City Opera, four productions at Aspen Music Festival, and the Swiss premiere of György Ligeti’s Le Grand Macabre, which received special praises from the composer.
Interviews with Maestro Delfs available upon request. Please contact Shelley Sharpe, Communication Manager, at 519-973-1238 ext. 22 or shelley_sharpe@windsorsymphony.com to make arrangements.
