Windsor Light Music Theatre

Windsor Light Music Theatre is proud to present this exciting musical.

Auditions Jan 6th & 10th at 7pm. Location: 2491 Jos St Louis Windsor On 519-974-6593

Sweet Charity is a musical with music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon. It is based on Federico Fellini’s screenplay for Nights of Cabiria. However, where Fellini’s black-and-white Italian film concerns the romantic ups-and-downs of an ever-hopeful prostitute, in the musical the central character is a dancer-for-hire at a Times Square dance-hall.

The musical premiered on Broadway in 1966, where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, and also ran in the West End as well as having revivals and international productions. The show was adapted for the screen in 1969 with Shirley MacLaine as Charity and John McMartin recreating his Broadway role. Bob Fosse directed and choreographed this film.

Saturday, January 15, 2011 @ 6-8pm – Winter ARTcrawl 2010 – A Surreal Good Time!

On January 15th 2011 join the art crew for a Winter ARTcrawl and have a Surreal Good Time!

We will be celebrating the death of French surrealist artist Yves Tanguy who passed away in 1955. Tanguy’s work is typically characterized by non-representational alien “landscapes” which are populated with various abstract shapes, sometimes angular and sharp and sometimes with an intriguingly organic look.

The ARTcrawl will begin at ARTspace at 6:00pm to celebrate the opening of guest artist Marshall Heaton and his exhibition Bombs & Babes. Heaton juxtaposes imagery of the nostalgic military pin up girl and World War II imagery. Using stories passed down to him from his grandparents Heaton creates a “second generation story that is fantasy, imagination, and non reality.” Using collage techniques he transfers photocopied images onto a printing stone or plate and aims to “soften the visual image [of war] with a beautiful woman usually scantily clad this proves effective for drawing in the viewer to explore his underlying story.

From ARTspace you can stroll down King Street, Parisian-like, to the lovely setting of Eve Chocolatier where the spectacular interior is just as enjoyable as the various chocolate drinks which will be served along side specialty treats.

You can also visit the William Street Café for an outdoor wonderland café setting. Warm up with come coffee or tea and nibble elegantly on some snacks.

The crew will be heading down to the Thames Art Gallery for the 8 pm opening of the exhibition Comp Ose by artist Ellen Moffat. Ellen has flown in from Saskatoon to be present at the opening to discuss her artwork. The exhibition consists of two separate constructions: vBox and twicescore. vBox is a twenty-foot long vocal instrument and resonating sound chamber with physical controllers and interactive programming that allow participants to modify the multi-track polyphonic composition as live sound. twicescore is a two-keyboard text generating instrument with integrated computer consoles, physical controllers and projection. The keyboards, positioned at opposite sides of a room, invite participants to compose independent texts.

Join in on the exhibition and personally explore this intriguing form of audio and visual arts. After the opening reception join us in Studio 1 at the Cultural Centre to enjoy some tunes by Bob’s Band and scrumptious snacks from William Street Café.

Admission is free! Don’t forget to bundle up – It’s surreal cold outside!!

Windsor Symphony Orchestra

John Morris Russell was named the Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. He will succeed the ensemble’s founder Erich Kunzel, who led the Pops until his death in 2009.

The Windsor Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director for the past ten years, Maestro Russell will assume the leadership position for one of the world’s most active and celebrated symphonic pops ensembles the on September 1, 2011. Part of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra umbrella organization, the Cincinnati Pops tours nationally and internationally and has more than 100 available recordings.

Search Committee Chair Jack Rouse called John Morris Russell, “a fantastic musician and a visionary leader perfectly suited for this incredible gig to lead the Cincinnati Pops.” The announcement of his appointment follows an exhaustive year-long search process.

Although he will eventually make Cincinnati his primary residence, Russell will continue to perform as Music Director in Windsor through the 2011-2012 season. “I look forward to extending my professional relationship with the WSO well beyond 2012” he said.

“An appointment of this stature will focus more attention on the tremendous accomplishments of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra,” Russell commented. His remarkable success with the WSO was cited a major factor in the Cincinnati Search Committee’s unanimous decision.

Russell will next lead the WSO in four performances of “Messiah and More” in Windsor, Leamington and Amherstburg on December 17, 18 and 19. He is in Cincinnati this week to guest conduct “Happy Holidays with the Pops” at Music Hall with Grammy winner Debby Boone.

Windsor Women Working with Immigrant Women

The Newcomer Art Project (N.A.P) at Windsor Women Working With Immigrant Women is concluding the year with a holiday bang through the enchantment of drama at the Windsor Public Library, Central Branch – 850 Ouellette Ave at 4 PM on December 15th, 2010 at 4pm.

This short holiday performance will showcase some of the major holidays around the world, staged in It’s a Wonderful Life meets Home Alone type drama. Holidays of Hope promises to be a performance that teaches and bridges cultural understanding. One idea remains common however–no matter what your cultural holiday practice, the overall understanding is that Love brings us all together.

Struggling through language barriers and grappling with artistic ability, this remarkable performance promises to be much more than just a holiday play. The significant process that this cast have gone through, breaking their own barriers in order to work as a team and embrace differences, makes this effort worthwhile.

Funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, NAP is a one year young program dedicated to building the confidence and self esteem of young immigrant girls through the transformative powers of the arts. They have put on various performances throughout the city that have inspired and sparked interest in the community about newcomers and their experiences. Their process of engaging with the community through the arts has delivered miraculous results for self-esteem and self worth and this session’s participants are ready for performance number four.

This event is free to the public and is sponsored by Citizenship and Immigration Canada.

Windsor Symphony Orchestra

John Morris Russell was named today as the Conductor of the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.

The Leona Drive Project: Site Specificity and Experimental Communities

Thursday, 2 December 2010, 7:00 pm, Room 1113 Medical Education Building

The Leona Drive Project was a landmark collaboration in which more than 20 noted artists joined with students, developers and place-makers to create a site-specific exhibition on a street in one of Toronto’s oldest inner suburbs, Willowdale. The project, which ran for 10 days in October 2009, featured 18 original artist projects installed in a series of five vacant bungalows slated for demolition. The project was ranked “top art show of 2009” by Toronto’s Now Magazine.

Specifically designed to engage with the architecture and spatial design of the houses, the works spanned a variety of media, from audio, architectural installation and projection to photography, sculpture and performance. The project incorporated recorded audio interviews with new and longtime residents of Leona Drive, photographs of Willowdale past and present, and a documentary film about the project and the process behind it by Philip Hoffman.

Dr. Marchessault conceived The Leona Drive Project and co-curated it with Ontario College of Art & Design Professor Michael Prokopow. The artist works were commissioned through the Public Access Collective in association with the LOT: Experiments in Urban Research collective.

Workshop Description: Spend the morning or evening making cards and original prints for someone special. This hands-on workshop will focus on creating one-of-a-kind cards and prints using a range of colored paper, printing inks and paint etc. Monoprinting is a printing technique whereby a design is drawn onto a flat non-porous surface, also referred to as a printing plate. Paper is laid on top and after pressing, the image from the plate is transferred onto the paper. Monoprinting, as the name suggests, is when you create on unique print (rather than having a plate or a screen with an image which can be reproduced again and again). There are a number of different ways to make a monoprint, but in this workshop students will learn three different methods of monoprinting while focusing on basic drawing and painting techniques. Students will learn how to use variety of tools and found material e.g. leaf, lace, ribbons, and different textural papers etc. Students will learn how to create a good composition and explore a variety of techniques and mediums that allow for creative expression in a fun and supportive atmosphere!

KORDA

KORDA PRESENTS: KING MIDAS

Fresh from the sell-out final weekend of their musical Reefer Madness, Korda Artistic Productions changes gears entirely to produce their annual wacky holiday panto for the whole family.  This year’s original offering is King Midas and the Golden Arches, a hilarious new version of the ancient myth, filled with songs and silliness for the kids and sly jokes for the grown-ups.

Written and directed by Korda’s Resident Director Jeff Marontate, with original music by Robert Godden and choreography by Alexandra Spirou, King Midas and the Golden Arches is a panto in the British tradition, inviting audience participation, featuring bad drag and inventive animal costuming, and twisting an old chestnut of a story into a new comic tale.  King Midas and the Golden Arches is Korda’s 4th original panto, following Cinderella:  The Unauthorized Panto, Robin Hood, and Hansel and Gretel: Behind the Gingerbread.

King Midas and the Golden Arches opens Friday December 10 at 7:00 with a Pay What You Can preview (minimum $5.00 please).

Dates/Times:
Saturday December 11 at 2:00 and 7:00,
Sunday December 12 at 2:00,
Saturday December 18 at 2:00 and 8:00
Sunday December 19 at 2:00.

Tickets are $15.00 for adults, and $8.00 for students;  Family packs of one adult and one student are $20.00, or two adults and two students for $40.00.

Tickets may be purchased at Motions 1, at Nancy Johns Gallery and Framing, or at the theatre door at 2520 Seminole (one block east of Walker Road) in Windsor.

Busses to Beethoven Making Music Accessible to Students of Windsor and Essex County

The Windsor Symphony Orchestra hosts amazing education outreach programs for students in the community. While the price per student is affordable the cost of transportation has made these programs inaccessible for many students.

How this program helps our youth:

1.)    Early musical training helps develop brain areas involved in language and reasoning

2.)    Students of the arts learn creative thinking and problem solving by imagining diverse solutions because questions about the arts do not have only one right answer

3.)    A study of the arts provides children with an internal glimpse of other cultures and teaches them to be empathetic towards people of these cultures

4.)    Music provides children with a means of self-expression, creating self-esteem as a natural by-product

5.)    The study of music develops skills necessary in the workplace. It focuses on “doing” as opposed to observing, and teaches students how to perform. Today’s employers are looking for multi-dimensional workers with the sort of flexible intellect that music education helps to create

OPENED UP: A walk through lost, forgotten, vacant, and underused spaces + Artscape’s Placemaking Workshop

For an hour and a half after work on Tuesday, November 30, we’ll be walking around downtown Windsor and getting access to a variety of closed / vacant / underused spaces.

Justin Langlois will be guiding it with Tom Lucier, and we’re hoping to have a lot of ambitious and excited people out with us. City-owned buildings, privately held storefronts, and cavernous bingo halls are all a part of our route, and you’re invited to join us in imagining a different downtown for our city — one with ample, affordable, and exciting spaces for artists, performers, musicians, and other creative-minded folks.

We want to start a real conversation about what it would take to get these spaces filled with people who need them. We want to help give people a reason to be excited about being a practicing artist in this city again. We know that finding space needs to be at the top of that list, and we want to help.

Meet us at Phog Lounge at 5pm sharp. We’ll wind our way through the downtown core and head back to Phog for some food, drinks, and lots of conversation. We really want you to be there, let us know if you have any questions.

Then on Wednesday, December 1st: Artscape’s Placemaking Workshop

University of Windsor

University Players presents comedy Smash
University Players continues its 52nd Season in 2010-11 with Jeffrey Hatcher’s comedy Smash.

The play runs November 18-21 and 24-28, 2010 at Essex Hall Theatre.

George Bernard Shaw once said, “If you want to teach an audience a lesson, you’d better make them laugh or they’ll kill you.” Jeffrey Hatcher’s Smash is a hilariously funny modern adaptation of Shaw’s novel “An Unsocial Socialist”. In May, 1910, an idealistic young millionaire leaves his bride twenty minutes after their wedding to plot a socialist revolution. He soon finds himself undercover at a boarding school for well bred young ladies and initiates his rebellion. But things don’t go according to plan, and he begins to question everything he’s ever believed about life, politics, and most importantly, women.

Date and Time: Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m., Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, November 21, a “Talk Back” discussion with the director and actors will follow the performance.

Tickets are $18-$20. Essex Hall Theatre is located on the University of Windsor campus.

For information or tickets, call 519-253-3000, ext. 2808 or visit www.UniversityPlayers.com.

2011 Windsor Fringe Applications

From Our Friends at the Windsor Fringe Festival

2011 Windsor Fringe Applications will be online, Monday, November 15th at 12:01 AM at www.windsorfringe.com.

In 2010, for the first time, the Windsor Fringe was oversubscribed, so Actors Theatre of Windsor (ATW) the producer of the festival, wants to ensure that local, regional and international artists are all aware when 2011 applications will be available for download online to ensure equal access to interested potential participants.

We appreciate ACW&R’s assistance in getting out Windsor-Essex community-wide alert out to advise when applications will be available, as we expect that we will be moving to a waiting list very quickly after the application is available, based on the requests for applications which have been coming into our offices.

All applications are accepted ‘first come, first served’ based on date and time of arrival of a completed application and payment are received by our offices. After the initial places are taken, we will continue to accept applications are accepted on a wait list basis.

Electronic Submissions
Essentially, since the applications are available online, along with the option to pay by Paypal, it will be possible to submit the application by e-mail and submit an electronic payment soon after they are available at 12:01 AM, so the quickest way to apply will be online.

In Person Submissions
Applications may be submitted in person, along with a cheque, money order, cash or proof of payment via Paypal by as of 10 AM on Monday, November 15, 2010, to 1420 Victoria Avenue, Windsor Ontario, N8X 1P3. In person applications will be accepted from Monday to Friday, from 10 AM to 4 PM at this address.

Submissions By Mail
Applications by mail are still accepted based on post mark to the address above, as long as spaces are still available when the application and payment arrive at our offices.

The Windsor Fringe, in its fourth year, is one of the most successful revenue generating projects on the North American CAFF tour. In 2010, only three of 18 English, Regular Fringe, Theatre Companies did not make back their full original investment. The remaining companies made back their original investment, or doubled, or tripled their money. In 2010 The Drowsy Chaperon, the pick of the Windsor Fringe, generated revenue in ticket sales of 10 times its original investment! And while the Windsor Fringe is at the top of the revenue generating list of the North American CAFF network, with very high average sales per participant, the price to participate remains one of the lowest for the entire tour, just $650 Cdn in 2011.

Please remember that the participation contract is not complete until ATW receives both an application AND payment. If the payment and the application are submitted separately, the participation request is assigned the date and time when both the application and the payment are in our offices.

Please do not be disappointed! To have the best chance of obtaining a spot at the 2011 Windsor Fringe, ensure your applications are in as soon as possible after they are available online after 12:01 AM on Monday, November 15, 2010.

Good Luck!

This Week at Artspeak Gallery

We perceive the environment around us through our senses, and light is the primary deliverer of that information for most of us. Taking photographs captures that light, just as our eyes do. However, photographs are not just images. They are memories of places we’ve been, wonders we’ve seen, people we’ve met, things we’ve done. The memories in my exhibit are of both natural and man-made wonders, memories of places I’ve been, things I’ve seen, as I wander through my environment.

Memories of Light‘ is Denis’ first solo exhibition, having participated in a half dozen art festivals and community exhibitions, all thanks to his love Monica, who is an accomplished photographer herself. He teaches Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Windsor when he’s not out taking pictures.

Closing reception: November 5 from 7-10pm.

“RELATIONSHIPS”
This series of paintings makes statements about particular interactions between human beings.
These human figures are painted in a graphic, semi-realistic manner.
Danuta Siniarska

Danuta Siniarska is a Windsor based artist who received a MFA Degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland in 1980. She moved to Canada in 1987. For the past 20 years, her work has evolved from figurative experimentation to abstraction. The realistic forms that are initially developed on the surface of the canvas are constantly changed to expose rhythmic shapes that form a new painting in which the surface vibrates with color and form, creating imaginative spatial compositions. Light and a focal point have also become significant elements in recent paintings. Her paintings are in many public and private collections in Poland, the U.S.A., and Canada.

Korda Productions: Reefer Madness

ReeferPoster1sm
On November 5, the hilarious musical Reefer Madness will open for a 2 weekend run with Korda Artistic Productions. Based on the late ‘30s anti-marijuana propaganda film, Reefer Madness tells the heart-wrenching(ly funny) tale of wholesome teenager Jimmy Harper, who falls in with a bad crowd at the local reefer den. One toke is all it takes to transform Jimmy from good egg to bad apple, as he descends into a seedy sleezy underworld of sex, drugs and violence. Can Jimmy’s sweetheart Mary save him?
Reefer Madness is written by Kevin Murphy and Dan Studney, and is directed by Korda’s Resident Director Jeff Marontate. Devon L. Hansen is Music Director, and Alexandra Spirou is choreographer. Costumes are by Cynthia Ing and Angela Di Ponio, and Set Design is by Jordan Cabral. Graphic Designer Daniel Nolin has created the production’s poster.
Reefer Madness features Andrew Filice as Jimmy Harper, Monique Formosa as Mary Lane, Chase Montgomery as pot pusher Jack, Tracey Atin as his abused moll Mae, Jacqueline Tinus as seedy tramp Sally, Jeffery Bastien as hop-head Ralph, Robert Godden as the stern Lecturer and Alexandra Spirou as the plucky Placard Girl.  Dan Brown, Kristen Calibaba, Crystal Mahoney and Julia Bravo-Pallero make up the very talented ensemble.
The play runs November 5, 6, 11, 12 &  13 at 8:00, and November 7 at 2:00.  Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for seniors & students.  Tickets may be perchased at Motions 1, at Nancy Johns Gallery & Framing, or on performance nights at the Kordazone Theatre at 2520 Seminole.

About the exhibitions…
David Merritt: shim sham shimmy
Until – January 16, 2011
David Merritt wryly characterizes his artistic practice as “loitering at the intersection of drawing and installation.” Appropriately, this exhibition features a selection of drawings, and video works exploring aural experience.
Merritt’s drawings are decisive explorations of image and sound. The contents of his chart drawings are derived from databases of popular music. Taking the titles of popular songs, he maps them in intricately drawn diagrams, making connections between the many songs that use the same phrases, such as “last train.” In a cartoon-like speech bubble, “last train” is drawn at the top of this chart, its presence a seed for an explosion of musical associations: last train… has gone; last train… to… the stars; last train… tonight. Interwoven lines, supplemented by many erasures, impose a new order on familiar musical phrases. The viewer is invited to decipher the connections from within the dense layering of marks comprising this chart. Upon close viewing, the intricate construction becomes apparent.
This exhibition is organized and circulated by Museum London and curated by Melanie Townsend, Museum London.
Bring Our Curses Home
Until –November 7, 2010
Bring Our Curses Home deals with aspects of disenfranchisement, alienation and consumption that characterize suburban youth culture in many parts of the world. Chris Down, David Poolman (MFA graduate, University of Windsor) and Roman Tkaczyk investigate similar themes of rebellion, aggressive posturing and the often violent rejection of stultifying cultural norms. For example, the attraction of Death Metal music, according to Poolman “is its ideological dissent from and destruction of the status quo, its embracement of ‘otherness’, and its utter rejection of all music and thought that came before it”. Similarly, Tkaczyk subtitles his series of digital drawings of conveniences hidden in switchblade handles “Weapons for Everyday Life”, implying the need to arm oneself with objects and ideas in order to survive in an increasingly hostile world. Using images of mosh pits, mud bogging and roller derbies, Down explores practices which release violent and erotic energy in ecstatic, anti-social, anti-productive activities, a resistance to ‘usefulness’ which is potentially subversive of our culture’s current means-end rationalism.
Munazza Naeem

Shooters Photography Club

Shooters Photography Club is a Kingsville-based Community Photography Organization that holds monthly meetings on the first Wednesday of the month from 7 pm to 9:30pm.  Prior to the meeting from 6pm – 7pm,  Photography 101 will be provided.  During this time, individual assistance will be available for any and all questions about photography techniques and equipment.
Our monthly meeting may be a speaker, a workshop or a show and share night.  At the show and share meetings, our members may share their photos in print form or digitally projected.
For each monthly meeting, there is a Fun Shoot Theme.

Nov. 3rd Meeting – Speaker:  Sandi Wheaton and her travels on Route 66 through infrared photography

Sandi Wheaton has been exhibiting her work for several years in the US and Canada, and is the recipient of numerous awards and arts grants. She spent the past ten years working as a video producer for General Motors in Detroit by day, and pursuing her photography passion by night.
Sandi has also spent several years documenting the ecologically-troubled Salton Sea in desert California.
That work has won many accolades, and will be featured in a solo exhibition at the Art Gallery of Windsor
in 2011. Currently, she is working with the Injured Workers Coalition, Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers, and the Workers Health and Safety Centre on an Ontario Arts Council-funded research and development project called “Legacy Costs: Burden or Benefit?”. The project seeks to examine the real “Legacy Costs” that burden southwestern Ontario communities, left behind by irresponsible workplaces allowed to protect unfettered profits.
